Barbara Helen Buxton, a longtime resident of Bridgeport and Stratford, died on Monday, March 1, at The Nathaniel Witherell in Greenwich. She was 93. Born in Boston on October 11, 1927, she was the only child of George and Helen Ammidown and grew up amid a large extended family in the Boston area.

She graduated from Framingham State Teachers College and Boston University before starting her career teaching Home Economics in Hopedale and Newton, Mass. During a summer teachers program at the University of Connecticu­t, she met Henry Buxton of Bridgeport, to whom she would be married for 49 years. Upon settling in Bridgeport, they began threedecad­e careers as educators in the Bridgeport Public Schools, including many years teaching together at Central High School. Barbara retired in 1986 after 16 years as Assistant Principal of Bassick High School, and joined Henry for a retirement filled with travel, family, and volunteeri­ng.

Barbara had a unique ability to find joy and wonder in everything, and she shared that delight with friends and family through a beautiful smile. Her patience and understand­ing made her a pleasure to know personally and profession­ally. She had many talents, including sewing, knitting, singing, painting, and genealogy. Barbara truly enjoyed life and the people around her, and she has left a legacy of caring and courtesy without judgement.

The many organizati­ons she was involved in include the Mary Silliman- Sarah Riggs Humphreys Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as Past Regent; Orient Chapter No. 2, Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Past Matron; Beta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma for over 50 years; Greater Bridgeport Chapter, American Associatio­n of University Women for over 50 years; Pyremus Chapter, Daughters of the Nile; Daughters of the American Colonists; Huguenot Society of America; Bridgeport Hospital Auxilary and the Greater Bridgeport Retired Teachers Associatio­n.

She was predecease­d by her husband, Henry, and is survived by her daughters, Louise Williamson of Cos Cob ( husband Joe, children Joe Jr, Meg, Stephanie and Beth) and Leslie Buxton of Stamford ( daughters Elle and Tiffany and granddaugh­ter Xena). Barbara’s family wishes to express gratitude to Beth Rickard of the Inn at Watermark 3030 Park and Barry McGovern of the 3rd floor at The Nathaniel Witherell for their attentive care.

Family and friends are invited to Barbara’s graveside funeral service at 10: 30 a. m. on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at Mountain Grove Cemetery, 2675 North Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06604, with a live stream available at www. leopgallag­hergreenwi­ch. com.
