Muhl hurt: UConn freshman Nika Muhl sprained her left ankle in the third quarter of Saturday’s quarterfinal victory over St. John’s. Muhl needed help getting off the floor and was seen later on crutches.

Coach Geno Auriemma said he didn’t know the severity of Muhl’s injury.

“Nika’s a pretty tough kid, as tough as they come,” Auriemma said. “If I were to bet … Nika’s going to give it every opportunity over night, and then she’s going to try to play. If she doesn’t play, it’s because it’s serious. We’ll know more a little bit more later.”

Getting into the act: Muhl’s absence, coupled with the minutes restriction on Anna Makurat, created more playing time for sophomore Aubrey Griffin ( six points, five rebounds in 15 minutes) and freshman Mir McLean ( five points in 11 minutes).

“We have players that are capable of helping us,” Auriemma said. “Sometimes it looks like, ‘ Why don’t you play them more?’ Then other times it looks like there’s a huge drop- off between our first five and then some of our next group. Today was a good way to get their feet wet, and hopefully tomorrow they’ll add to that.”

Survive and advance: Fifth- seeded Villanova edged fourthseeded DePaul 78- 72 in overtime Saturday in quarterfinal play. Sophomore Maddy Siegrist paced the Wildcats with 30 points and 11 rebounds.

Round Two: UConn won its lone regular- season meeting against Villanova, blitzing the Wildcats 90- 52 on Dec. 22 at Finneran Pavilion. Siegrist, the Big East’s leading scorer ( 23.3), was held to 15 points on 6 of 22 shooting.

The Huskies lead the all- time series 38- 17.
