Fairfield estate once owned by Bluefish owner listed with $2M price drop

- By Nicole Funaro

The Victorian home on 1111 Sasco Hill Road in Fairfield stands out on its own for its classic Queen Annestyle features, but it was inspired by another notable property.

Drawing style cues from the Inn at Shelburne Farms in Lake Champlain, Vt., the Fairfield home combines “Victorian style elements with modern-day amenities and room for multiple generations of family and guests,” according to its listing. The home has no shortage of space: it contains nine bedrooms, 12 full bathrooms and 12,378 square feet of living space that the listing notes makes the home comfortable for “an intimate gathering of 10 or a party for 100.”

Currently on the market for $7.5 million, the Sasco Hill Road Victorian was put on the market in July 2020 for $9.5 million, marking the first time it was for sale since 2006. By February 2021, the home was briefly taken off the market and relisted six days later for $8.395 million, according to the Realtor.com property details. Two months later, the price dropped to $7.999 million before the listing was removed in February 2022 to make way for a nearly $500,000 price drop.

The home was originally built in 1999 by Mickey Herbert — the former owner of the Bridgeport Bluefish professional baseball team — who worked with Southport-based architect Jack Franzen to make the Victorian property as authentic as possible. Its classic Victorian details take the form of the home’s turrets and verandas, as well as it’s “steeplypitched roof, corbelled chimneys and turned-wood columns,” the listing notes.

Inside the home, the traditional Queen Anne features continue with a “grand foyer” that was the recipient of an American Institute of Architects Design Award, which has a “double stairway of quarter-sawn oak,” oak paneling and arches. There’s also a formal dining room with two parlors and pocket doors, a kitchen with a painted tin ceiling and several private guest suites.

In addition to the main living spaces, the home has a theater, according to the listing, as well as a private apartment outfitted with a full kitchen, bedroom, living room and laundry area. Outside on the home’s over 3-acre property is a heated Gunite pool with an outdoor kitchenette, along with a grill and cooktop.
