Irene Martin

Irene L. Martin, age 97, of Shelton, entered into rest on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at Griffin Hospital in Derby. She was the devoted wife of the late Woodrow “Woody” W. Martin. Irene was born in Shelton on January 21, 1925, daughter of the late Stanislaus and Helen (Lojek) Zimolag, and was a lifelong Shelton resident.

She worked for the former JC Penney Catalog Store in Derby until her retirement in 1999. A longtime active member of St. Margaret Mary Church, Irene worked on the church bulletin for over 25 years. She also was a volunteer at the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Irene loved to read, especially the comics in the paper with Peanuts being her favorite, do crossword puzzles, and watch old movies. She loved the violin and enjoyed classical music. Her favorite was Dvorák’s 9th symphony, Going Home. She had an extensive collection of Angels watching over her.

She is the beloved mother of Sandra Martin, Richard Martin (Deborah), Donna Martin, Robert Martin, John Martin (Elizabeth), and David Martin; proud grandmother of Jeffrey, Curtis, and Colleen Martin ( Justin Grenier), Travis and Joelle Martin, Joshua Pivarnick, and Taylor Devine (Mike Rak) and great-grandmother to Jalynn Gallagher, Lilly, and George Grenier. She is also survived by her sister, Helen Izabel, and many nieces and nephews.

Irene was predeceased by a daughter, Marianne Pivarnick, her brother Michael Zimolag, and three sisters, Mary Mazur, Stella Zimolag, and Sofie Szablowski.

Friends may greet the family at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, from 9:30 to 10:30. Her funeral procession will leave the parlor at 10:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM at St. Margaret Mary Church in Shelton. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
