DARIEN BLUE WAVE (2-0) VS. ST. JOSEPH CADETS (2-0)

-

WHERE/WHEN: St. Joseph High School, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

PLAYER TO WATCH, DARIEN: QB Cooper Hancock. After earning the starting job late in the summer, Hancock has been impressive and efficient in his first two starts, but hasn’t seen a defense like St. Joseph’s. Hancock’s best asset is his mobility, which should come into play against a ferocious Cadet front seven.

PLAYER TO WATCH, ST. JOSEPH: WR William Diamantis. Darien won’t let the opposing team’s best player beat it, meaning it’ll probably try to take away top-target Jesse Bike. That should leave the 6-foot-2 Diamantis, who scored twice last week, with an opportunity to make plays.

QUOTABLE, DARIEN: “We’re walking into a hornets’ nest. We were 12-1 last year, No. 1, they’re 12-1, No. 2 and they’re only No. 2 because we beat them, they know that…I’m sure that we’ve been on their bulletin board for a long time now.” — Darien coach Rob Trifone

QUOTABLE, ST. JOSEPH: “They’ve blown us out the last two years. Last year, it was 21-10 at the half and then we didn’t show up for the second half and they took it right to us. We need to get over that stuff and believe that we can beat them.” — St. Joseph coach Joe Della Vecchia

STORYLINES: Doesn’t get much better than No. 1 vs. No. 3 in Week 3 of the season? Darien has rolled through its first two opponents, but a win this week would prove the winner of the last three Class LL titles is still the class of the state in 2018. St. Joseph has already taken down then-No. 1 New Canaan at home in Week 1 and has a chance to expel some demons while proving they’re the real deal.
