Lawmen tame Lions

- By Emery Filmer

MILFORD — Jonathan Law High School lost its first two football games this season by a combined 62 points. So, it would be easy to say Friday night’s opponent, perennial underdog Bassick, was uh, shall we say, just what the doctor . . .

Ah, that’s TOO easy.

Suffice it to say that Law got its first victory of the season. With quarterback Zach Smith tossing six touchdowns — four to Ethan Saley — all in the first 17 minutes of the game, the Lawmen routed the Lions 50-26.

“It was a game we were expected to win, but we have to win it like we were expected to win,” Law coach Erik Larka said. The Lawmen did allow 20 fourth-quarter points when the second stringers were in but that can be excused.

Law wasted no time getting into blowout mode. Smith threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Saley on the third play of the game and the rout was on.

After Saley made the first of four interceptions on Bassick’s first play, it took the offense seven plays to make it 14-0. This time the Smith-to-Saley connection was from eight yards out.

Four plays later it was Zack Passaro with the interception of Bassick QB Julio De Los Santos. And another four plays after that it was Sheldon Gargano busting in from 1-yard out to give Law a 20-0 lead.

Any hopes of Law shutout were wiped out, however, on Bassick’s next possession. On a 4th-and-14 Hail Mary pass from De Los Santos, Jordan Gallimore came down with the ball and raced into the end zone for a 56-yard touchdown.

The first quarter, which took 55 minutes to play, was slowed by numerous Bassick injuries, penalties and incomplete passes. Before the quarter ended, the Lawmen added two more touchdowns. First on a Smith-toVinny Schulte 12-yard scoring play, and the second was a Smith-to-Naheim Washington 14-yard strike.

So, with 34 seconds remaining in the first quarter, it was 36-6.
