RICHMOND, Va. — Khadidiato­u Diouf just missed a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Stags in the team’s season-opener.

Fairfield (1-0) led buzzer-to-buzzer and held on for the win, despite scoring just three points in the fourth quarter.

Sam Lewis added 11 points and Katie Armstrong scored 10 for the Stags, while Alex Parson was the only player to reach double figures in scoring with 15 points in the loss for the Spiders (0-1).

MEN’S HOCKEY

Sacred Heart 4, Army West Point 2: Ryan Steele, Marc Johnstone, Austin McIlmurray and Jason Cotton each scored one goal and Brett Magnus made 28 saves in goal in the win for the Pioneers (2-3-1, 2-1 AHA) at West Point, N.Y.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Bridgeport 2, Stonehill 1: Anisha Hill scored an unassisted goal in the first half, Maegen Doyle scored an unassisted goal on a penalty kick in the second half and Jennifer Wendelius made eight saves in goal in the win for the Purple Knights (15-4-1) in the first round of the NCAA Division II Regional tournament at Knights Field in Bridgeport. Bridgeport advances to host the College of St. Rose in the second round on Sunday at 11 a.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Daemen 3, Bridgeport 1: Ellie Rich had 33 assists, nine digs and six kills, Breanna Jones had 19 digs and Morgan Knight had 11 digs and seven kills in the loss for the Purple Knights (14-13) in the ECC semifinals at Lumsden Gymnasium in Amherst, N.Y.

Sacred Heart 3, St. Francis (Pa.) 0: Sarah Ciszek had 35 assists, 17 digs and four kills, Alix Polk had 12 kills and 12 digs and Liisel Nelis had 15 kills and nine digs in the win for the Pioneers (15-9, 8-5 NEC) at DeGol Arena in Loretto, Pa.
