Fatal shooting of 57-year-old man is city’s third of the year

- By Ethan Fry and Tara O’Neill

BRIDGEPORT — A 57-yearold city man was shot to death on Kossuth Street early Friday.

By afternoon, police had identified him as Philip Ingram.

Investigators were seeking camera footage and witnesses after the shooting, which was reported near the intersection of Kossuth and Jane streets shortly after 9 a.m.

At 9:03 a.m., police said, Bridgeport’s 911 call center received a report from a caller who told them a person got into a “verbal altercation” with the caller and brandished a weapon in the area of Arctic and Jane streets. Police said “that male party then proceeded to follow the individual with the weapon.”

As officers responded to the area, the city’s ShotSpotter system was activated at 9:09 a.m., recording gunfire in the 800 block of Kossuth Street.

When responding officers got to the scene at 9:10 a.m., they found Ingram critically wounded in the street, police said.

Police have not confirmed whether the 911 caller was Ingram.

Scott Appleby, the city’s director of emergency management/ communications and homeland security, said investigators are “reviewing video, calls and witnesses. So it’s (the 911 call) possibly part of the entire puzzle.”

Ingram was taken to Bridgeport Hospital by medics. He was pronounced dead at 9:53 a.m.

The intersection was blocked off with yellow crime scene tape

Friday morning into the afternoon. The neighborhood is a street of multi-family houses and includes a corner store and a church.

Friday morning’s killing was the city’s third homicide of the year, and the first for February.

Activist Tony Barr was at the scene about 30 minutes after the shooting and said he was flagged down by residents as he drove by. He said violence in the streets will continue unless more is invested in the community.

“How come surrounding towns have none of these problems on a daily basis and we have it every other day?” Barr asked.

Friday’s homicide remains under investigation.
