Fairfield cops probe bank robbery

- By Peter Yankowski

FAIRFIELD — Police are investigating after an armed robbery was reported Tuesday at the Stop & Shop branch of People’s Bank.

Officers, detectives and police K-9 units were called to the People’s Bank inside the Stop & Shop on Kings Highway Cutoff around 4:32 p.m., according to Lt. Antonio Granata of the Fairfield Police Department, after receiving multiple 911 calls.

Granata said a “lone white male” entered the People’s Bank and handed a note to the teller while displaying a firearm.

The man, described as 5 feet 8 inches tall “with long shoulder length hair, wearing a black hat and gray button down shirt with a dark colored tie,” left with an undetermined amount of money after a teller complied with his demands.

“There were no reports of injuries during the incident,” Granata said.

Witnesses told police the suspect ran west out of the parking lot, zig-zagging between parked cars.

Police were unable to track him using K-9 teams and believe the man escaped using a vehicle.

Authorities have released a surveillance video of the suspected bank robber and have asked for the public in identifying the man.

Granata said police do not believe the robbery is related to an earlier robbery of the same location on Sept. 30 or a robbery that occurred in Stratford earlier that day.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fairfield Police Department Quality of Life Unit at 203-254-4606.
