Shelton cancels three scheduled games

Three Shelton boys soccer games over the next two weeks have been canceled. It is uncertain if it coincides with the high school beginning full remote learning on Tuesday for two weeks due to an individual at the school testing positive for COVID-19.

Shelton’s games at Notre Dame-West Haven Tuesday night, versus Cheshire on Friday and versus Platt Tech on Oct. 23 have all been canceled. Shelton athletic director John Niski did not specify why the cancellations were made in an emailed response to questions.

“Some of the games have been rescheduled and some have been canceled for various reasons. The district does not identify individual members of the school community who are on quarantine,” Niski said.

SCC commissioner Al Carbone confirmed the three games will not be made up. He also said Shelton’s game at West Haven Oct. 20 was rescheduled to Nov. 9.

“All I know is that for two weeks, Shelton can’t play and we have adjusted their schedule as well as several other teams,” Carbone said. “I don’t know the specifics.”

The Gaels’ next scheduled game will be at Amity on Oct. 27. A follow-up question as to when the team would practice next was not immediately answered.

Hearst Connecticut Media reported Shelton High and Shelton Intermediate School will be in distance learning until Oct. 22. In

addition to one individual from each school testing positive for COVID-19, staff members at both schools must be quarantined as well, according to interim superintendent Beth Smith.

Cheshire will now play at Notre Dame on Thursday while Platt Tech will play at Whitney Tech on Oct. 22. Carbone noted other changes to the league boys soccer schedule — with some teams playing outside its own region, but still against league teams — for competitive balance reasons.

“We went into this season knowing we would be starting and stopping,” Carbone said. “I’m very pleased most of the schools are being very accommodating to one another.”
