Trump: Mr. Irrelevant

- By Edward L. Marcus Atty. Edward L. Marcus is former chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee in Connecticut and former State Senate majority leader. His office is in North Branford.

The election is over and we are fortunate to have Joe Biden as our next president.

Four years of chaos, corruption and a disturbing reality show are almost behind us. Trump has 70 days, plus or minus, to attempt to wreak more havoc. He must be carefully watched and monitored. There is nothing worse than an unhinged “bull in a China shop.”

I previously highlighted how the Electoral College is the vestige of racism protected by the southern states’ senators. The popular vote is the only way to go. The conflict over the Electoral College needs to be put in the dust.

Biden won the popular vote by more than four million votes, the most votes ever received by a presidential candidate. However, if a handful of voters in Pennsylvania had voted the other way, what if Trump had won? Biden with the most votes ever would not be President. Pressure must be put on the Senate — both Democrats and Republicans — to abolish the Electoral College.

Trump talks about legal challenges to change the election, but what he is really saying is that he owns the Supreme Court and they must do his bidding. Trump has not set forth any facts to make a valid argument that shows fraud and I do not believe that the Supreme Court judges would dare to overturn an election that is now a fait accompli. This election was fair and transparent throughout.

Trump will flail about, but ultimately must accept the fact that he lost. He cannot continue to threaten the will of a majority of the American people.

He will continue with his flailing about until the media stops covering him, ignores him and treats him as irrelevant. You can see that developing as Twitter and many news organizations identify his lies or simply refuse to print his lies.

Trump will hate being ignored and I believe will ultimately accept reality so that he and the nation can get back to some sense of normalcy. Now, it seems, he is looking for some way to save face

Meanwhile, he is facing possible indictment for tax fraud in the State of New York. Of course, it is possible that New York’s judiciary can create some sort of deal to give him immunity against criminal charges in return for a peaceful transition.

I would hate to see him get off the hook on criminal charges. No one in America is above the law. We must demonstrate that quite clearly. As for civil penalties, such as restitution of stolen tax monies, might be a fair middle ground. Other civil cases, such as the one accusing Trump of sexual assault, should go forward as these cases would for anyone.

Bottom line: Do not give him legal coverage, immunity. Outside of the legal battles he may face, we all should just ignore him and move on. Keep an eye on what he may try to do on behalf of his children. He should not be allowed to use the Office of President to create financial gain for his family.
