‘I’ll be an adult,’ not snowflake, about Biden win VOICES

-

It has been a long time since America was united. It has been a long time since we were collectively in agreement over anything.

If we could put a date on that, it would more than likely be Sept. 12, 2001. We had been attacked by foreign powers and we were incensed and outraged, much as we were when we heard the news about the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor.

I’m writing this down because of the recent news of Joe Biden winning the presidential election. This news made me think about why I am a conservative instead of a liberal, a Republican instead of a Democrat and most of all why my compatriots are in their political camps. I think it goes beyond clichés such as “producers versus non producers” and other such bromides. It has to do with a vision of what our country has been, what we are and more importantly where do we want to go.

As a conservative, I think our country has always been a beacon for those seeking freedom and liberty and a staunch opponent to fascism and imperialism. Wave after wave of immigrants came to our shores in the late 19th and early 20th centuries seeking to escape feudalism and making new lives for themselves and their families. And they did it legally, bringing new ideas to our country.

We are not without flaws, some of the worst flaws in history include slavery and Jim Crow laws. But we make every effort to correct those flaws.

Where are we today? We are in the land of “woke,” inventing new pronouns that will not offend those who may identify as a gender different than what is on their birth certificate and we are in the era of a “Green New Deal,” which promises to triple the price of gasoline at the very least and collapse our economy to that of a third world nation. Go ask Venezuela.

Where should we go? As a conservative I believe in Trump’s vision of America. Let the free market soar, let individual freedom reign and put government in the rear of the bus. Until COVID-19 our economy was going gang busters. Taxes were cut and regulations were rolled back. Our economy today, despite COVID-19, is doing better than it ever did under Obama and Biden. Yet Biden was elected president.

Unlike my liberal colleagues I will accept his presidency. I will not scream, rant, rave, loot, burn down local businesses and threaten to leave the country. I will be an adult. The adult my parents raised me to be. Not a snowflake.
