Man charged with injuring cop after chase

BRIDGEPORT — A local man was in custody Wednesday after allegedly injuring a police officer.

Officer Alexander Miccoli suffered a concussion after, police said, Joshua Winder allegedly hit the officer in the head with his cellphone on Tuesday. Miccoli was treated at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and later released.

Winder, 25, of Kossuth Street, was charged with assault on a public safety officer, second-degree assault, resisting arrest, possession of narcotics with intent to sell and possession of a controlled substance.

During his arraignment hearing Wednesday afternoon, Winder, who just got out of prison for drug and resisting arrest charges, loudly protested as Superior Court Judge Kevin Doyle ordered him held in lieu of $100,000 bond.

“The defendant has a significant criminal history and the allegations against him are very serious,” the judge said.

He continued the case to Jan. 26. According to police, on Tuesday, Miccoli was patrolling the city’s East Side when he spotted a Honda Civic that allegedly had a license plate for a different car. The officer had pulled behind the Honda as it parked on Brooks Street when the driver, later identified as Winder, jumped out and began running, police said.

Police said Officer Miccoli managed to catch up with Winder on East Main Street, but Winder then allegedly turned and struck the officer in the head with his cellphone.

The officer managed to fire his Taser at Winder and take him into custody, police said.

Police said they found two clear bags on Winder containing what appeared to be heroin and marijuana.
