ROBBERY CHARGES

A local teen was in custody Monday after police said he robbed a man at gunpoint.

Tyrique Cunningham, 18, of Carroll Avenue, was charged with first-degree robbery, interfering with police, carrying a pistol without a permit and illegal possession of an extended magazine.

During Cunningham’s arraignment hearing Monday afternoon, Superior Court Judge Kevin Doyle ordered Cunningham held in lieu of $200,000 bond and continued the case to Jan. 5.

Police said on Friday afternoon, a local man was working under the hood of his car on Fifth Street when two men approached him. One of the men allegedly pointed a large handgun at the victim and demanded he turn over his car keys, police said.

The men grabbed the keys and fled, police said.

A short time later, police said officers were patrolling the area when they spotted a man later identified as Cunningham who matched the description of one of the robbers. When officers approached the man, police said he took off running.

The officer caught up with the man after a foot chase through yards, police said. During the chase, police said officers saw the man allegedly discard an object. When officers went back to the spot, they found a handgun loaded with an extended magazine, police said.

During a search, police said they found the victim’s car keys in Cunningham’s pocket.

Police said the victim later identified Cunningham as the gunman who robbed him of his keys.
