Police: Man pulled gun trying to win back an ex
STAMFORD — Police said a city man arrested for pointing a loaded semiautomatic firearm at a man on High Ridge Road last week was trying to win back a former girlfriend.
At his arraignment Friday, Judge Bruce Hudock raised Jerry Diaz’s bond from $750,000 to $1.1 million, after a prosecutor argued that Diaz was a danger to the public.
Because of the court closure on Thursday due to the snow storm, Diaz, 19, was held at police headquarters since his arrest on charges including possession of a pistol without a permit, reckless endangerment, threatening, possession of an illegal high capacity magazine, violation of his conditions of release and driving under suspension.
When the Wednesday incident took place, Diaz was free on $400,000 worth of court appearance bonds relating to a car crash on Canal Street in August 2019 in which two city teenagers died. He was charged with with drunken driving and two counts of second-degree manslaughter following that incident.
Diaz has little chance of posting the the new bond, said Mark Welsh, the public defender who represented him during his arraignment. Welsh declined comment on the new allegations.
While arguing before Judge Bruce Hudock to raise Diaz’s bond to $1 million, Assistant State’s Attorney Dan Cummings said Diaz threatened two people with a firearm and has been in court on prior occasions for violating his conditions of release relating to the crash.
Cummings also said that he has filed a motion to revoke Diaz’s bond for the crash that killed Nishawn Tolliver, 18, and Ky-Mani Antoine-Pollack, 19. Police have said Diaz was driving 96 miles per hour near where Canal Street intersects with Ludlow Street early in the morning of Aug. 26, 2019.
