Fairfield mom accused of abandoning son released on bond

BRIDGEPORT — A Fairfield woman claimed she left her 5-year-old disabled son on a city sidewalk last month because she is afraid of him, according to police.

“She stated that he attempted to strangle her once at night,” police said.

Police said they later discovered that after leaving him on the street, the woman had thrown all his toys and clothing in the trash.

The mother, 41-year-old Sharon Williams of Fairfield, was charged with risk of injury to children, cruelty to children, abandoning a child, leaving a child unsupervised and first-degree reckless endangerment.

On Monday afternoon, Williams embraced her mother and sister in the lobby of the Golden Hill Street courthouse after posting the $150,000 bond.

“I have nothing to say to you,” she commented to a reporter as she left the courthouse.

Earlier, Superior Court Judge Tracy Lee Dayton set the bond and continued the case to May 3.

Police said witnesses told officers that shortly before 6 p.m. on March 31, a woman in a white Infinity sedan had dropped the boy at the corner of East Main and Burroughs

streets, pointed her finger at him and then drove off.

It was raining at the time and police said the boy wandered about the street before neighbors came to his aid.

Police said the boy is disabled and is unable to verbally communicate so they couldn’t get any identification from him. He was turned over to the state Department of Children and Families.

Police said they posted the boy’s photo on social media and on the news media and eventually they were able to identity Williams as the boy’s mother. They said they went to her home and found the white sedan parked in the driveway. She was taken into custody.

A neighbor told officers she had seen Williams dumping the child’s toys, clothing, and a bicycle in the trash.

Police said Williams initially claimed she had dropped her son off with relatives but then told detectives he was in Ansonia with a friend.

Police said she finally confessed that she had left him on a Bridgeport street because she is afraid of him because he is “learning disabled and intellectually challenged.”
