Services set for girl killed in murder-suicide

- By Tara O'Neill

WESTPORT — Layla Kim Ngân Malon brought smiles and happiness to everyone around her, according to the 7-year-old’s obituary.

Malon was born in Danbury to Eric Malon, of Westport, and the late Tracy Do. She died June 17.

The state’s chief medical examiner ruled Malon’s cause of death to be homicide by drowning at the family’s Lyndale Park home where her mother’s body was also found. The medical examiner said Do died by suicide from “sharp injuries of torso and extremities.”

In an obituary for the 7-year-old posted Monday, family described her as possessing a “sweetness that truly captivated people.”

“She brought smiles, laughter and happiness to all around her,” the obituary said. “She loved and admired her big sissy, Alexis, and was her daddy’s little girl.”

The Coleytown Elementary School student collected stuffed animals — or, as her obituary said she called them, “stuffies.”

Calling hours for Malon will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home in Fairfield, the obituary said. Her burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Willowbrook Cemetery in Westport.

In addition to her father and sister, she is survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins and other “endearing family members,” her obituary said.

In lieu of flowers, the Malon family requested contributions be made in Layla’s memory to Mental Health Connecticut at 61 S. Main St., Suite 100, in West Hartford.

The young girl and her mother’s deaths rocked the quiet Westport community.

Layla Malon and Do, 46, were found by police in their Lyndale Park home around 4 p.m. June 17. Officers first responded to the home, which is on a private street off Weston Road, for a report of an unresponsive woman. It’s unclear who called 911.

Police said officers found Do’s body and then the 7-year-old. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Police Chief Foti Koskinas called it a “horrible tragedy.”
