Historic 1700s house in Shelton on the market for $439,000

- Meredith Guinness

Known as the Captain David Judson House, the five-bedroom house at 255 Leavenworth Road in Shelton is actually a home in three acts.

The original portion of the historic property was built in the 1700s in the White Hills section of the city and was expanded with a two-story addition facing School Street in 1807, said Jennifer Martin, who is co-listing the home with Terri Tournas for Higgins Group Private Brokerage.

“They were a well-known seafaring family in Stratford,” said Martin, who said the home is a near replica of Judson House that’s now a museum in that town.

Along the way parts of the home have served as the family’s summer retreat, a post office and a general store. When couples married at the Baptist church still standing across the road, they would often retire to the Judson House grounds for their wedding receptions, Martin said.

The final addition was built in the 1980s.

Situated on 2.14 acres boasting perennial and vegetable gardens, the home offers an eat-in kitchen, dining room, sitting room and formal parlor on the main floor. Many original features, including wide plank wood floors, built-in leaded glass cabinet and hand-painted murals survive.

Six fireplaces, including a beehive oven, pocket doors, shipbuilder stairs and an underfloor coal oven/well speak to the home’s long history. One of the upper bedrooms features a staircase leading to the large, unfinished attic that features hand-hewn beams.

The purchase price includes some of the home’s contents, including an antique baby grand piano in the parlor. A historic twostory barn, which is in need of structural renovation, also stands on the grounds, which are dotted with mature apple and peach trees and stone steps quarried in a century long past.

This house is on the market for $439,000.
