KEEP AN EYE ON

Shoot ’em up: One of UConn coach Dan Hurley’s few complaints about the Huskies’ 99-48 season-opening win over Central Connecticut State on Tuesday night was that the Huskies only attempted 13 3-pointers. Part of that was the blowout nature of the game, part of that was freshman sharpshooter Jordan Hawkins not playing.

But Hurley noted that Andre Jackson passed up a good 3-pointer and others could have been more assertive from distance. He’d like to see UConn hoist up around 18-20 on Saturday.

Riders on the storm: Coppin State is in the midst of a grueling road trip. The Eagles, who are coached by former Maryland star Juan Dixon, played games on consecutive nights in Chicago on Tuesday and Wednesday against Loyola and DePaul, and played at Rider in New Jersey on Friday night before Saturday’s noon bout in Hartford. When Coppin State plays at No. 25 Virginia on Nov. 19, it will be the team’s seventh game in 10 days. All told, 12 of the Eagles’ first 13 games are on the road.

“I’ve been there, played that type of schedule,” said Hurley, who began his head coaching career at Wagner. “But we get everyone’s best shot. When you coach or play at UConn, you get everyone’s best.”

Coppin State is one of three HBCU (historically black colleges and universities) that UConn will play over the next few weeks, along with Maryland-Eastern Shore (Nov. 30) and Grambling State (Dec. 4).

Take me to The River: With the UConnClemson football game being broadcast on the radio by the UConn Sports Network, Saturday’s game will only be available on 105.9 The River.
