William Taylor Smith, age 87, of Fairfield, beloved husband to his childhood sweetheart and wife of 68 years Barbara Smith, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 20, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. Born September 12, 1934 to the late Leander and Sadie Smith, Bill grew up in Stamford and was a long-time resident of Fairfield. Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfathe­r and great grandfathe­r who placed his family above all else. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother Lee Smith and sister Pat Plumb of FL and his granddaugh­ter, Meridith Solustri of Trumbull.

Bill proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy and enjoyed his retirement years after a long career at Norden Aircraft and Hayward Tyler. The consummate volunteer, Bill loved his many years of coaching little league or fund raising for the Boy Scouts, high school sports and music programs or any organizati­on that needed a helping hand. Bill was a 4th degree member and treasurer of the Fairfield Assembly of the Knights of Columbus. He loved to travel with his wife and fondly remembers his trips to Italy and many years at the Cape. He enjoyed his quiet time on the shores of Long Island Sound walking his dogs Tiko and Sammy. Bill cherished his six grandchild­ren and seven great grandchild­ren who span 45 years. He never missed an opportunit­y to go to a ball game, play, concert or dance recital.

Bill is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Kyle Solustri of Trumbull and son Scott Smith and his wife Jayne Lilley of Stratford, grandsons Christophe­r and wife Stefania Solustri, of Trumbull, and Daniel and wife Julia Solustri of SC, granddaugh­ters Courtney Smith, of Black Rock, Kelsey and her husband Kyle Shearman of Fairfield and Kendall Smith of Scotland and 7 great grandchild­ren ages 3 months to 13 years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, November 29, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield, CT. Interment will be immediatel­y following mass at Oak Lawn Cemetery, 1530 Bronson Road, Fairfield, CT.
