NEW TASTE IN TOWN
Mexican cuisine replaces burgers at Westfield Trumbull mall
TRUMBULL — Mere days after Guacamole’s Mexican Cuisine opened at the Westfield Trumbull mall, Gabriela Velazquez — one of the restauarant’s owners — was hearing rave reviews from customers.
“I actually have received a lot of compliments and about the food and service,” Velazquez said of the spot, where she is manager.
Guacamole’s opened on Easter Sunday in the space once occupied by Wahlburgers, an outpost of the burger chain owned by the Wahlberg brothers — chef Paul Wahlberg and actors Mark and Donnie Wahlberg. Though that restaurant opened to much fanfare in 2017, it closed in late 2020.
Town and mall officials announced last year that Guacamole’s would move into the space. It’s the third location for the restaurant, which Velazquez said offers authentic Mexican cuisine. The other locations are in Branford, and at the Connecticut Post Mall in Milford.
The restaurant’s menu includes everything from tableside guacamole to a variety of tacos, burritos and an array of seafood dishes. “We really like bringing authentic Mexican cuisine to this location,” Velazquez said.
Guacamole’s of Trumbull was supposed to open earlier this year, but was delayed for multiple reasons. One, Velazquez said, is that the space had been vacant for a while and work was needed to bring the building into compliance. She said, there was a delay in getting the liquor license for the establishment.
Now that it’s open, the restaurant is a welcome addition to the mall, said Rina Bakalar, Trumbull economic and community development director.
“We are excited to add this full service, authentic Mexican restaurant option to the restaurant mix in Trumbull,” Bakalar said. “They are experienced restaurateurs and plan to have music and other specials to offer.”
