- By Eddy Martinez

DERBY — Residents hankering for some hot lemon, original hot or lemon garlic wings from Wingstop currently have have to drive to Hartford, Mashantucket, or Vernon to get their fix. But that drive will soon be a lot shorter.

The newest Wingstop location will soon open in Shop Rite Plaza on Pershing Drive, according to Royal Properties, which owns the plaza. The restaurant has a planned June 10 opening.

Royal Properties, which owns the Shop Rite Plaza on Pershing Drive, announced in December a Wingstop location would soon open at 49 Pershing Dr. Residents on the city community Facebook page shared their reactions, many excited for the restaurant, which is also expanding into Bridgeport. The Derby location will open on June 10 according to the company.

With the placement of “opening soon” signs at the plaza, residents took the community Facebook pages the share their excitement and compare the company’s fare to that of local establishments such as the Dew Drop Inn.

Jeff Kintzer, a broker for the property owner said in a press release the restaurant would be able to take advantage of its closeness to the traffic on Pershing Drive.

“Wing Stop is the perfect addition to this center and will benefit from the high traffic of ShopRite as well as 22,000 cars per day along Pershing Drive,” Kintzer said.

The shopping center itself is in a prime location according to the property owner, with 35,000 shoppers at the Shop Rite. According to Shop Rite’s real estate division, the restaurant will have 12 employees, and will be open from 11 a.m. to midnight seven days a week.

Derby isn’t the only city in Southern Connecticut getting a Wing Stop. Bridgeport is also getting one as well and that location will open on June 8. The restaurant will be located on 51 Boston Ave., Bridgeport.

In a statement, the company said it planned further expansion in Connecticut.

“Wingstop aspires to be a Top 10 Global Restaurant Brand and is expanding at a rapid pace, as experienced in Connecticut and across the globe. We believe that everyone should have a chance to try our signature, 11 flavors that put Wingstop in a category of one, and we’re excited to see the response from fans in Connecticut,” according to the statement.
