We must do more for school safety

-

What has been happening in our schools is horrific and we have to find a way to help protect our children. I think every classroom should be equipped with a warning system that can be activated within the classroom. When activated it would set off a loud alarm, alerting the entire school that there is an emergency. This would cause an immediate lockdown. Each room would have a deadbolt that can lock the door from the inside only. This alarm would also ring in the local police stations.

We should be doing more to protect our children and teachers from harm. It will be expensive to implement these safety measures but look at the cost to the families of these murdered youngsters.

When the Second Amendment was written I’m sure no one was referring to military assault rifles. I was a hunter and I still go target shooting, but I am not in favor of anyone except the military having this type of assault rifle. We should use our common sense and raise the age to 21 to purchase an assault rifle along with a background check, paid for by the applicant. And a report on the mental condition of the applicant signed by a doctor should be presented along with the application. It should not be easy for an 18-yearold, or anyone, for that matter, to purchase a military assault weapon that can inflict massive damage to a human being.

Our forefathers had no concept of today’s weaponry. Muskets, swords and sabers were the weapons of the day then.

Politicians should consider what the majority of people demand, the safety of our children and theirs, as well. Must we wait until a celebrity, politician or other famous person loses a beloved family member before any real action is taken?
