BRIDGEPORT — A local man was in custody after police said he shot at another car in an apparent road rage incident on Route 8.

Sean Hepburn, 29, of Robert Street, was charged with four counts of attempted first-degree assault, three counts of reckless endangerment and one count each of illegally firing a firearm, firing a gun near a highway, possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, interfering with police and criminal use of a firearm.

Superior Court Judge Maureen Dennis ordered Hepburn held in lieu of $250,000 bond and continued the case to Nov. 21.

According to state police, at about 9:30 p.m. on May 1, a local man was driving north on Route 8 with three passengers in his car when a car began beeping at them from behind as they were driving through a construction zone.

State police said the car, a Honda sedan, then pulled up along side the passenger side of the victim’s car and the driver of the Honda rolled down his window, pointed a handgun at the victim and fired.

The bullet went into the passenger side of the victim’s car and the Honda sped off, police said.

State police said the victim initially slowed down but then he took off after the Honda which got off at Exit 8. The victim followed the Honda to a traffic light where he managed to take photographs of the Honda’s license plate, police said. The victim then called police.

State police said they traced the Honda to Hepburn’s home. Hepburn answered the door but refused to come out of the house so officers pulled him outside and took him into custody, state police said.

Investigators subsequently got search warrants for Hepburn’s car and home and found three loaded guns in Hepburn’s bedroom including one that had previously been reported stolen in a Bridgeport burglary, state police said. Police said one of the guns matched the caliber of the bullet fired into the victim’s car.
