- By Carl Adamec

Jim Mora stayed within the UConn football program for his new offensive coordinator.

Gordon Sammis, the Huskies’ offensive line coach for the past two seasons under Mora, will take over offensive coordinator duties from Nick Charlton, who left UConn for a spot as an offensive assistant coach with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns. Sammis joined Mora’s staff as offensive line coach in 2022 and added run game coordinator to his duties last season.

During his two seasons, Sammis coached offensive guard Christian Haynes, who earned Associated Press and Sporting News All-American team honors in back-to-back seasons and is projected to be taken in the NFL Draft later this month.

In 2022, the Sammiscoached offensive line helped the Huskies rank 33rd in the nation in rushing offense at 191.0 yards per game. In the passing game, the offensive line was 29th in the NCAA in sacks allowed at 1.38 per game. The UConn frontfive improved on their sacks allowed stat in 2023, ranking ninth in the country allowing just 12 sacks in 12 games.

Sammis came to UConn after spending the previous three seasons in the same role at William & Mary, where he was also the team’s run game coordinator during the last two years. He has also coached at Lafayette, VMI, Columbia, and his alma mater Virginia.

An offensive guard for the Cavaliers (2003-07), Sammis earned a degree in government from Virginia in 2007 and returned to his alma mater as a graduate assistant coach from 201012, earning a master’s degree in education in 2012. He spemt two years coaching with the Cavaliers as an offensive line assistant during his first season and with the tight ends the following year.
