SHAKE IT OFF

Create a beautiful and practical mudroom for your cottage.

- BY VICTORIA VAN VLEAR

MUDROOMS ARE TRENDING FOR COTTAGE STYLE,

and for good reason. They’re both beautiful and practical—a charming way to invite guests into your home, while also fielding the daily comings and goings of your family. This mudroom by Emily Pinney of Pinney Designs has all the right components, and here are the pieces you need to create your own dream mudroom.

BUILT-INS.

For a clean and classic look, go for built-ins. This type of unit will contain all the basic necessities of a mudroom: seating, storage and coat hooks. Some mudroom built-ins even have doors over the storage portion, creating a locker look.

You can get your built-in custom designed for your space, or you can find pre-existing units to buy like furniture.

SIDING.

A little shiplap never hurt anyone, and the inside of the built-in for this mudroom shows off the clean lines of shiplap. Your mudroom is the perfect space to add wood siding, whether it’s just inside the built-in, or along the rest of the walls as well. You don’t have to stick with shiplap either. Try beadboard to add an extra cottage touch.

STORAGE CONTAINERS.

Add storage containers to the spaces in your built-in unit to keep things looking organized and minimize any messes. First measure the space that’s available in each cubby; then buy organizing baskets that all match and work with your décor style. For a bonus, add a tag to each basket with the name of a family member. They’ll have their own spaces to store shoes, outdoor toys and other essentials, and will also be responsible for keeping their basket organized.
