Modern Bungalow
This new home takes its roots from the surrounding Craftsman neighborhood.
Sometimes, the best way to design a home is to study its surroundings.
This was the case for this new build in Knoxville, Tennessee, designed by architect Jonathan Miller of Jonathan Miller Architecture and Design. “The inspiration for the house came from sticking with the architectural style of the neighborhood,” he said. “The homeowner wasn’t quite sure what style he wanted, so we selected a style that was most fitting for him and the context around the house.”
That style was a modern Craftsman bungalow. The exterior architecture is a mix of classic Craftsman style and modern touches. “The tapered columns on the porch that sit on stone bases, a large front porch with large windows, a continuous ridgeline with a single front dormer, broad overhangs and added architectural detailing are elements that speak to this house being Craftsman style,” Jonathan says. Craftsman bungalows are known for deep front porches and dormer windows, which Jonathan used as the main features on this home’s exterior.
He then paired these classic elements with modern touches, such as the dual roofing materials. Most of the roof has traditional asphalt shingles, while the porch overhang is a black metal roofing. The siding materials on the home are classic wood shingles on the gable, with sturdy brick on the first floor. Altogether, the effect is both traditional and modern—a style that will last the life of the home itself.
