Country Sampler

FROM HOUSE TO HOME

-

Tammy and Mike Zito, of Sacramento, California, have long held an appreciation for rustic farmhouse and country design, with a smidge of contemporary panache thrown into the mix. Follow the quick tips below to reproduce the Zitos’ homespun style in your own space.

BUILD A UNIFIED THEME

Shed antlers and found livestock skulls are among Tammy’s favorite decorating accents, and she has accumulated several of all shapes and sizes that she displays throughout her home. “I like collecting antlers because it makes A the home feel rustic,” she says.

LAYER IN ASSORTED TEXTURES.

A combination of wood, glass, metal, tin, wire and natural fibers can be woven into every room by way of the furnishings, benches, bottles, vessels, buckets, baskets, linens and window treatments. This coalescing of disparate surfaces underscores the pastoral vibe without taking away from the uniqueness of each object.

SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL.

The Zitos chose a soft, neutral color scheme speckled with the occasional dark tone for a bit of drama. The palette allows their handcrafted furnishings and oneof-a-kind design elements to shine without competing for attention.

FOLLOW YOUR FEELINGS.

Tammy uses many resources at her disposal, from Pinterest to magazines to home-decor shows; however, she ultimately allows her instincts to guide her when it comes to implementing a design. “I visualize how I want the room to look,” she notes. “But I approach decorating based off my feelings and how cozy and comforting I want it to be when it’s done.”
