Home Lab Basics

-

Setting up a lab at home is not as daunting as you might think. With this basic gear list and these fundamental techniques, anyone can do it.

Equipment

» density and concentration meter, such as Anton Paar Easydens

» ph meter, such as the HALO Wireless Beer ph Meter

» microscope

» stir plate » a trained palate

Mindset

» Think of your brewing space as a brewery, not as your garage or your kitchen counter.

» Be neat and orderly with your equipment.

» Clean and sanitize with a scientist’s diligence. » Take careful measurements.

» Keep meticulous notes.

» Learn to use a microscope and do cell counts.

» Pick up a book on microbiology (at least one on yeast biology—see “Start Your Own Brewing Lab with a Library,” page 54).

» Work to train and develop your palate.
