PATTERN NOTES
Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Glue or sew Bookmark pieces together. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.
OWL BODY
Rnd 1 (RS): With white, ch 5, 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 2 chs, 3 sc in last ch, working on opposite side of foundation ch, sk first ch, sc in each of next 2 chs, join (see Pattern Notes) in beg sc. (10 sc) Rnd 2: Ch 1, [2 sc in each of next 3 sc, sc in each of next 2 sc] twice, join in beg sc. (16 sc)
Rnd 3: In same st as joining, draw up a lp of violet, ch 1, drop white to WS, 2 sc in same sc, sc in next sc, [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] twice, sc in each of next 2 sc, [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] 3 times, sc in each of next 2 sc, join in beg sc. (22 sc)
Rnd 4: In same st as join, draw up a lp of peacock, ch 1, drop violet to WS, *[sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times, sc in each of next 2 sc, rep from * join in beg sc. (28 sc)
Rnd 5: In same st as join, draw up a lp of white, fasten off peacock, ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in next sc, *insert hook in sc directly below in rnd 3, yo, draw up a lp level with working rnd, yo, draw through both lps on hook, do not sk sc directly behind sc**, sc in each of next 2 sc, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in beg sc. (42 sc)
Rnd 6: Draw up a lp of violet, fasten off white, ch 1, sc in each st around, join in beg sc. Fasten off.
HEAD
Rnd 1: With violet, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in beg sc. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, join in beg sc. (12 sc) Rnd 3: Rep rnd 2. (24 sc) Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join in beg sc.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around, join in beg sc. (36 sc)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in each of first 12 sc, *(sc, hdc) in next sc, (dc, tr, ch 2, sl st in top of tr, dc) in next sc, (hdc, sc) in next sc* (first
ear), sl st in each of next 7 sc, rep from * to * (2nd ear), sc in each of next 11 sc, join in beg sc. Fasten off.
EAR TUFT
Cut 2-inch length of peacock, fold in half to form a lp, draw lp through ch-2 sp of ear to form a lp on hook, draw cut ends through lp on hook. Cut end to 1/2 inch. With sewing needle, separate plies of peacock to fluff.
EYE
Make 2.
Rnd 1: With white, ch 3, join in first ch, ch 1, 12 hdc in ring, join in beg hdc. Fasten off. (12 hdc)
BEAK
Row 1: With yellow, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn. (1 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, turn. (2 sc) Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc. Fasten off. (4 sc)
LEFT WING
Row 1: With violet, ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 7 chs, (sc, ch 2, sc) in last ch (shoulder made), working on opposite side of foundation ch, sk first ch, sc in each of next 6 chs, turn. (16 sc)
Row 2: Ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, working in back lps only (see Stitch Guide), sc in each of first 7 sc, sl st in ch-2 sp, leave rem sts unworked, turn. (9 sc)
Row 3: Ch 1, sk sl st, working in back lps, sc in each of first 5 sc, leave rem sts unworked, turn. (5 sc)
Row 4: Ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, working in back lps, sc in each of first 5 sc, sl st in ch-2 sp of row 1, working across rem sts of row 1, sl st in front lp (see Stitch Guide) of each st across. Fasten off.
RIGHT WING
Rows 1–3: Rep rows 1–3 of Left Wing. (5 sc)
Row 4: Ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, working in back lps, sc in each of first 5 sc, sl st in ch-2 sp of row 1, turn, working across sc of row 4, sl st in front lp of each st across. Fasten off.
BRANCH
Rnd 1: With brown, ch 14, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 3 chs (first point), ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 4 chs, sc in same ch as 4th sc of first point, sc in each of next 9 chs. Fasten off.
FOOT Make 2.
With yellow, ch 15, leaving 4-inch length, fasten off.
ASSEMBLY
Note: As Assembly progresses, allow to dry as needed and refer to photo as needed. Position Head with center bottom of rnd 6 at top of rnd 2 of Body and glue in place. Glue Wings to each side of Body. Glue Eyes to Head. With sewing needle and white thread, sew a black E bead to center of each Eye. Glue row 3 of Beak to Head centered below Eyes. Tack Branch to center bottom of Body. Thread rem length of yarn from Foot on tapestry needle, from WS sew through last rnd of Body around bottom of Branch, secure and fasten off any rem chs. Rep same for 2nd Foot next to first. Sew paper clip to WS of Owl at base of Body. Add glue to sewn area to secure. With RS facing, spray with starch and let dry completely.
