Scrolling Scallops Shawl
PATTERN NOTES
Shawl is made in 2 triangular halves. Each half is worked in vertical Strips joined as you go from center back of shawl to shawl end. Lacy crochet joins halves at center. Mark row 2 of First Motif of each Strip as right-side bottom edge of Right Shawl Half. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Chain-3 at beginning of row counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated. Mark row 2 of First Motif of each Strip as right-side bottom edge of Left Shawl Half. Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Do not remove markers until instructed.
SHAWL LEFT SHAWL HALF Strip 1 First Motif
Row 1: Ch 3, join (see Pattern Notes) to form a ring, ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), 11 dc in ring, do not join, turn. (12 dc)
Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 dc, [ch 4, sc in each of next 2 dc] 5 times, place stitch marker (see Pattern Notes), turn. (12 sc, 5 ch-4 sps)
2nd Motif
Ch 4, sl st in first ch-4 sp of previous Motif, turn.
Row 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in ch-4 sp just made, sl st in next sc of First Motif, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 dc, [ch 4, sc in each of next 2 dc] 5 times, sl st in next ch-4 sp of First Motif, turn.
3rd Motif
Ch 4, sl st in first ch-4 sp of previous Motif, turn.
Row 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in last ch-4 sp made, sl st in next ch-4 sp of adjoining Motif, turn.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 dc, [ch 4, sc in each of next 2 dc] 5 times, sl st in next ch-4 sp of previous Motif, turn.
4th Motif
Rep 3rd Motif, except mark first ch-4 sp made in row 2 for placement of next Strip. Rem Motifs [Rep 3rd Motif] 13 times. At the end of last rep, fasten off. (17 Motifs)
Note: This Strip is back first Strip of Shawl Half.
Strip 2 First Motif
Row 1: Ch 3, join to form a ring, ch 3, 11 dc in ring, turn. (12 dc)
Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 dc, [ch 4, sc in each of next 2 dc] twice, ch 2, with same side of both Strips facing, sl st in marked ch-4 sp of previous Strip, remove this stitch marker (see Pattern Notes), ch 2, sc in each of next 2 dc on working Motif, [ch 4, sc in each of next 2 dc] twice, place stitch marker in 3rd joined ch sp, turn.
2nd Motif
Ch 4, sl st in first ch-4 sp of previous Motif, turn.
Row 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in last ch-4 sp made, sl st in next sc of First Motif, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 dc, [ch 4, sc in each of next 2 dc] 5 times, sl st in next ch-4 sp of First Motif, turn.
3rd Motif
Ch 4, sl st in first ch-4 sp of previous Motif, turn.
Row 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in last ch-4 sp made, sl st in next marked ch-4 sp of adjoining Motif, remove stitch marker, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 dc, taking care not to twist work and with same side of both Strips facing, [ch 2, sl st in next free ch-4 sp of previous Strip, ch 2, sc in each of next 2 dc of current Strip] twice, [ch 4, sc in each of next 2 dc of current Strip] 3 times, sl st in next ch-4 sp of previous Motif, turn.
4th Motif

5th Motif
Ch 4, sl st in first ch-4 sp of previous Motif, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 dc, with same side of both Strips facing, [ch 2, sl st in next free ch-4 sp of previous Strip, ch 2, sc in each of next 2 dc of current Strip] twice, [ch 4, sc in each of next 2 dc of current Strip] 3 times, sl st in next ch-4 sp of previous Motif, turn.
Rem Motifs

Work as for Left Shawl Half.
JOINING
Row 1: Hold Strip 1 of Left Shawl Half with RS facing to work from bottom to top edge, ch 2, leaving First Motif unworked, sl st in 3rd ch of first free ch-4 sp of 3rd Motif, *ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch of next free ch-4 sp, ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch of next occupied ch-4 sp of same Motif, ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch of next free ch-4 sp, rep from * across through first ch-4 sp of last Motif, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch of next free ch-4 sp, do not turn. Row 2: With Halves placed side by side, RS facing and matching ch-4 sps, rotate work to join Halves from top to bottom edge. A.
