Peekaboo Quiet Book
PATTERN NOTES
Due to small parts, Book is not intended for use by children under 3 years of age. Blocks are worked in rounds. Do not join or turn unless otherwise stated. Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Chain-2 at beginning of round counts as first half double crochet unless otherwise stated. Chain-4 at beginning of round counts as first double crochet and chain-1 unless otherwise stated.
SPECIAL STITCHES
Single crochet join (sc join): Place slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull up a lp, yo and draw through both lps on hook.
Lp stitch (lp st): Wrap yarn from front to back over index finger
(2 strands on finger), insert hook in indicated st, pick up lower strand and pull up a lp (2 lps on hook), yo and draw working yarn through both lps. Push lp off finger.
BOOK BEAR BLOCK
Rnd 1 (RS): With Aran, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc) Rnd 2: Sc in each st around. Rnd 3: 2 sc in each st around, join (see Pattern Notes) in first sc, changing color (see Stitch Guide) to buff fleck in join. (12 sc) Rnd 4: Ch 2 (see Pattern Notes), working in back lps (see Stitch Guide), hdc in same st as base of beg ch-2, 2 hdc in each st around, join in top of beg ch-2. (24 hdc) Rnd 5: Ch 2, 2 hdc in next st, [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] around, join in top of beg ch-2. (36 hdc) Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same st as base of beg ch-1, sk next st, 6 dc in front lp (see Stitch Guide) of next st (ear made), sk next st, sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts, sk next st, 6 dc in front lp of next st (ear made), sk next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, [sc in each of next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st] twice, changing color to Aran in last sc. (34 sc, 2 ears)
Rnd 7: Working in back lps, sc in first sc, ch 1, hdc in unworked lp behind next ear, ch 1, sc in next st, [ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st] 4 times, sc in next st, ch 1, hdc in unworked lp behind next ear, ch 1, sc in next st, [ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st] 11 times, sk next st, join in beg sc. Fasten off. (18 sc, 2 hdc, 20 ch-1 sps) Rnd 8: Sc join (see Special Stitches) turqua in first ch-1 sp, sc in same sp, (ch 1, 2 sc) in each ch-1 sp around, ch 1, join in beg sc. (40 sc, 20 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 9: Sl st in each of next sc and ch-1 sp, ch 4 (see Pattern Notes), (dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc) in same sp, *[2 hdc in next ch-1 sp] 4 times**, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (32 hdc, 16 dc, 8 ch-1 sps, 4 ch-2 sps)
Rnd 10: Ch 2, *hdc in each st and ch-1 sp around to next ch-2 sp**, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) (corner made) in next ch-2 sp, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in top of beg ch-2. Fasten off. (18 hdc on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps) Arm Make 2. With buff fleck, ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 7 chs, 4 sc in last ch, working on opposite side of ch, sk first ch, sc in each of next 8 chs. Leaving a 7-inch tail for sewing, fasten off. (20 sc) Place Arm 2 sts below ear and sew in place through front lps of rnd 4.
Facial Features For eyes, with black, embroider 2 straight stitches (see illustration) between rnds 4 and 5, leaving 2 sts between. For nose and mouth, embroider 3 straight stitches with bottom of nose in center of rnd 1 and a straight stitch mouth below nose.
LION BLOCK
Rnds 1–5: With gold, work same as rnds 1–5 of Bear Block. At end of rnd 5, turn. (36 sts at end of rnd 5) Rnd 6 (WS): Ch 1, 2 lp sts (see
Special Stitches) in first st, [lp st in each of next 8 sts, 2 lp sts in next st] twice, lp st in each of next 3 sts, 6 dc in back lp of next st (ear
made), lp st in each of next 4 sts, 2 lp sts in next st, lp st in each of next 5 sts, 6 dc in back lp of next st (ear made), lp st in each of last 2 sts, join in first lp st, changing color to pale yellow in join, turn. (38 lps sts, 2 ears)
Rnd 7 (RS): Ch 1, working in back lps, sc in first st, ch 1, sk next st, hdc in unworked lp behind next ear, [ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st] 5 times, ch 1, sk next st, hdc in unworked lp behind next ear, [ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st] around, ch 1, sk last sc, join in beg sc. (18 sc, 2 hdc, 20 ch-1 sps) Rnd 8: Sl st in first ch-1 sp, ch 1, 2 sc in same sp, (ch 1, 2 sc) in each ch-1 sp around, ch 1, join in beg sc. (40 sc, 20 ch-1 sps) Rnds 9 & 10: Work same as rnd 9 and 10 of Bear Block. (18 hdc on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps at end of last rnd) Facial Features Embroider eyes, nose and mouth same as Bear Block.
FLOWER BLOCK
Rnd 1: With light blue, ch 4, join in first ch to make a ring, ch 2, 11 hdc in ring, join in top of beg ch-2. (12 hdc) Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st as base of beg ch-2, 2 hdc in each st around, join in top of beg ch-2. (24 hdc)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, 2 hdc in next st, [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] around, join in top of beg ch-2. (36 hdc)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st as base of beg ch-1, sc in each of next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st, [sc in each of next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, do not join. (40 sc) Rnd 5: Working in back lps, sc in next st, [ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st] around to last st, ch 1, sk last st, join in beg sc. (20 sc, 20 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 6: Work same as rnd 8 of Lion Block. (40 sc, 20 ch-1 sps) Rnds 7 & 8: Work same as rnds
9 and 10 of Bear Block. (18 hdc on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps at end of last rnd)
Vase
Row 1 (RS): With pumpkin, ch 4, join in first ch to make a ring, ch 2, 5 hdc in ring, turn. (6 hdc)
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in first st, 2 hdc in each of next 5 sts, turn. (12 hdc)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] across, turn. (18 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, [sc in each of next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st] across, turn. (20 sc) Row 5: Ch 1, working in ends of rows and on opposite side of foundation ch, work 10 sc evenly sp across. Fasten off. (16 sc)
Joining row: With RS of Flower Block facing, place Vase on bottom half of rnds 1–4 of Block, working in back lp of row 4 of Vase and in front lp of rnd 4 of Block, join pumpkin in first sc of rnd 4 of vase and in corresponding st on Block, sl st in each of next 19 sts. Fasten off.
Flower Make 1 each bright yellow, amethyst & perfect pink. Rnd 1: Ch 2, 10 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (10 sc)
Rnd 2: Sl st in first sc, [ch 1, 3 hdc in next st, ch 1, sl st in next st] 5 times, working last sl st in first sl st. Fasten off. Place Flowers on Block and mark positions with pins. Remove Flowers and sew buttons on Block. Button Flowers on matching buttons.
EGG BLOCK
With white, work same as Flower Block, changing color to pumpkin in last st of rnd 4.
Eggshell Make 2. Rows 1–4: With white, work same as rows 1–4 of Vase. (20 sc at end of row 4)
Row 5: Ch 1, [sc, ch 2, dc] in ends of each of rows 4 and 2, in center ring and in end of row 2, sl st in end of row 4, turn.
Joining row: Ch 1, place Eggshell on top half of rnds 1–4 of Egg Block, working in back lp of row 4 of Eggshell and in front lp of rnd 4 of Block, sl st in each of next 20 sts. Fasten off. Rep to join 2nd Eggshell on bottom half of Block.
Chick
Rnd 1: With pale yellow, ch 4, join in first ch to make a ring, ch 2, 12 hdc in ring, join in top of beg ch-2. (13 hdc)
