Kaleidosco­pe Ball

PATTERN NOTES

For a smaller ball, use worstedor DK-weight yarn. Make a sample motif, adjusting hook size as needed; motif should be firmly crocheted to hold its shape. Do not join rounds unless otherwise stated; work in continuous rounds using stitch marker to indicate beginning of rounds. Weave in loose ends as work progresses and before assembling. Single crochet and chain-3 at beginning of round count as first double crochet and chain-1 unless otherwise stated. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Ball is assembled in two sections. Refer to illustrati­ons at right for joining sequence.

BALL HEXAGON

Make 20.

Rnd 1: With crayon box, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join. Place marker on first st and move up as each rnd is completed. (6 sc) Rnd 2: Working in back lps

(see Stitch Guide), 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: Working in back lps, 2 sc in each sc around. (24 sc) Rnd 4: Working in back lps, ( sc,

ch 3— see Pattern Notes, dc) in next st, [dc in next 3 sts, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st] 5 times, dc in next 3 sts. (30 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 5: Working in back lps, sc in 2nd ch of beg ch-3, [2 sc in next ch-1 sp*, sc in each of next 5 sts] 6 times, ending last rep at *, sc in each of next 4 sts. (42 sc) Rnd 6: Sl st in each st around,

join (see Pattern Notes) in beg sl st. Leaving 10-inch tail for sewing, fasten off.

PENTAGON

Make 12. Rnds 1–3: With molten lava, rep rnds 1–3 of Hexagon. (24 sc at end of rnd 3) Rnd 4: Working in back lps, [3 sc in next st*, sc in next 4 sts] 5 times, ending last rep at *, sc in next 3 sts. (35 sc) Rnd 5: Rep rnd 6 of Hexagon.

ASSEMBLY & FINISHING

Block motifs to side edge measuremen­t. With RS held tog, sew through rnd 5 of Hexagons and rnd 4 of

Section 1

Step 1: Place Hexagon on each edge of Pentagon and sew tog.

Step 2: Place 5 Pentagons between Hexagons and sew tog.

Step 3: Place 10 Hexagons between and on top of Pentagons and sew tog. Section 2 Rep Steps 1 and 2 of Section 1. With RS held tog, sew Sections tog with mattress stitch seam, leaving as many edges as needed unsewn to turn Ball RS out. Stuff firmly with fiberfill without stretching motifs. Sew remaining edges tog to close Ball.
