Row 2: Ch 2 (see Pattern Notes), horizontal hdc (see Special Stitches) in each hdc across, change color (see Pattern Notes) to next color in last st, turn. Row 3: Ch 2, working in back lps (see Stitch Guide), hdc in each st across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 2, horizontal hdc in each hdc across, turn.

Row 5: Rep row 3, change color to next color. Rows 6–15: [Rep rows 4 and 5 alternately] 5 times. Fasten off.

SQUARE B

Make 1 each B-numbered Color Sequence. Rows 1 & 2: Rep rows 1 and 2 of Square A.

Row 3: Ch 2, working in back lps, hdc in each st across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 2, horizontal hdc in each hdc across, change color to next color, turn.

Rows 5 & 6: Rep rows 3 and 4. Row 7: Rep row 3.

Row 8: Ch 2, horizontal hdc in each hdc across, turn.

Row 9: Rep row 3, change color to next color. Rows 10–15: [Rep rows 8 and 9 alternately] 3 times. Fasten off. With RS of any Square facing and holding 2 strands tog, join (see

Pattern Notes) buff to first st of last row, ch 2, hdc in each st across, ch 2 (corner made), [working in ends of rows, work 3 hdc evenly sp across each solid color stripe and 6 hdc in evenly sp across each

variegated color stripe] across to foundation ch, ch 2 (corner

made), working on opposite side of foundation ch, hdc in each ch across to corner, ch 2 (corner made), rep between [ ] once, ch 2

(corner made), join in top of beg ch-2. Fasten off. (24 hdc on each side, 4 ch-2 corners) Rep around each rem Square.

ASSEMBLY

Block each Square to 8-inch x 8-inch finished measurement and allow to dry thoroughly. Arrange Squares in 5 horizontal rows of 3 Squares each, alternating direction of stripes in each row as shown in chart or as desired.

Vertical Seam

With WS of any 2 Squares held tog and working through both layers, join 1 strand of buff in 2nd ch of first ch-2 corner, working in back lp of front Square and

front lp (see Stitch Guide) of back Square, sl st loosely (see Pattern Notes) in each st across and in both lps of first ch of next ch-2 corner. Fasten off. Referring to Placement Diagram, rep to join all Squares vertically in each row.

Horizontal Row Seam

With WS of rows 1 and 2 held tog and working through both layers, join 1 strand of buff in 2nd ch of first ch-2 corner, [working in back lp of front row and front lp of back row, sl st loosely in each st across*, working 4 sl sts across ends of each vertical seam] across, ending last rep at *, sl st in first ch-1 of last ch-2 corner. Fasten off. Referring to Placement Diagram, rep to join all rows horizontally.

Border

Rnd 1 (WS): With WS facing and holding 2 strands tog, join buff in horizontal bar directly below top lps of first hdc in top corner Square, ch 2, *horizontal hdc in each hdc across to first ch of last ch-2 corner before seam, [hdc in back bar of first ch of same corner,

ext hdc (see Special Stitches) in horizontal bar at center of seam, hdc in back bar of first ch of first ch-2 corner of next Square, horizontal hdc in each of next 24 hdc] across to ch-2 corner at next outer corner, (hdc, ext hdc) in first ch of ch-2 corner, ch 1, (ext hdc, hdc) in next ch of same corner,* rep between * 3 times, join in top of beg ch-2, turn. (436 hdc, 4 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 2 (RS): Ch 2, working in back lps, hdc in each hdc across to first ext hdc of next outer corner, [2 hdc in next ext hdc, (hdc, ext hdc, hdc) in next ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in next ext hdc, hdc in each hdc across to next corner] 4 times, hdc in each rem hdc across, join in top of beg ch-2, do not turn.
