FINISHED MEASUREMEN­TS

12 inches wide x 101/2 inches long (not including handle) x 4 inches deep

MATERIALS

• Red Heart Super Saver medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (7 oz/364 yds/198g per skein): 1 skein each #334 buff, #512 turqua, #316 soft white, #656 real teal and #726 coral • Size H/8/5mm crochet hook or

size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle • 4 stitch markers

GAUGE

7 sc = 2 inches; 9 dc = 1 inch

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Tote is made of 3 separate pieces sewn together; front, back and 3rd piece include bottom, sides and handle. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Skip single crochet behind front post stitches unless otherwise indicated.

SAND PATTERN

Multiple of 2 + 1 st plus 1 turning chain. Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch across, turn. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, *sc in next st 1 row below, sc in next st, rep from * across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each of first 2 sts, *sc in next st 1 row below, sc in next st, rep from * across, ending with sc in last st, turn. Multiple of 6 + 1 st.

Row 1 (RS): With turqua, ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, *hdc in next st, dc in next st, 3 tr in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * across, change to soft white, turn. Rows 3 & 4: With soft white, ch 1, sc dec (see Stitch Guide) in first 2 sts, *sc in each of next 2 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts**, sc dec in next 3 sts, rep from * across ending last rep at **, sc dec in next 2 sts, turn. Change to real teal at end of row 4.

Row 5: With real teal, ch 3, (counts as decreased tr) sk first st, tr in next st, *dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st**, tr dec

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Single crochet join (sc join): Place slip knot (see illustrati­on

on page 26) on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook.

Cable: Sk next 2 fptr, fptr around each of next 2 fptr, fptr around first sk st fptr around 2nd sk st.

TOTE FRONT

Rows 1–4: With buff, ch 38, work rows 1–4 of Sand Pattern. Rows 5–18: [Rep rows 3 and 4 alternatel­y] 7 times, fasten off at end of last row. (37 sts) Row 19–36: [Rep rows 1–6 of Sea Pattern] 3 times, fasten off at end of last row.

Edging

With RS facing sc join (see

Special Stitches) buff in lower right corner of piece, work 37 sc evenly across side edge (14 sc across Sand Pattern section and 24 sc across Sea Pattern section). Fasten off. (38 sc) On opposite edge, sc join buff in upper left corner, work 37 sc evenly across side edge. Fasten off. (38 sc)

BACK

Rows 1–36: Rep as for Front.

Edging

Rep Front Edging.

STARFISH APPLIQUÉ

Make 2. Rnd 1: With coral, ch 4, dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, [2 dc in same ch, ch 1] 4 times, join (see Pattern Notes) in beg ch-3. (10 dc, 5 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 2: Sl st in next dc, *sc in next sp, ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 chs, tr in next ch, sk 2 dc, rep from * around, join in beg sc, leaving 36-inch length, fasten off. Using photo as a guide for placement, sew 1 appliqué on Front and Back.

BOTTOM, SIDES & HANDLE Make 1. Bottom

Row 1 (RS): With buff, ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each rem ch across, turn. (12 sts) Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Rows 3–46: Rep row 2. First Side Row 47: Ch 1, working in back

illustrati­on) last row of sts to opposite side of foundation ch of Bottom.

Edging

Rnd 1: With RS facing, sc join Slip Knot #1 in edge of foundation ch, *working in end of rows across bottom section, sc in each of next 4 rows, sk next row, [sc in each of next 3 rows, sk next row] 9 times, sc in each of next 5 rows. (37 sts across bottom) Working up side across Handle and down other side, [sk next row, sc in each of next 5 rows] across, sc in last row, join in beg sc. Fasten off.* (158 sc) TurnSlip Knot piece #3 and working on opposite side, sc join in 46th row of bottom rep between * Slip Knot #3 for 2nd side.

ASSEMBLY

Counting sc sts of Edging, move each of 4 markers 38 sts up toward handle. With Front and Bottom/Sides/Handle piece WS tog, with buff beg at right-hand stitch marker, whipstitch Front to sides and bottom matching stitch for stitch ending at left-hand stitch marker. Work same as for Back. Remove stitch markers. Weave in ends. CW
