GAUGE
C hook and 2 strands diamond: 6 sc = 1 inch, 4 sc rows = 1 inch E hook and 2 strands white: 4 sc = 1 inch; 4 sc rows = 1 inch
PATTERN NOTES
Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Do not turn at end of rows unless otherwise stated. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Chain-2 at beginning of row counts as first half double crochet unless otherwise stated.
SPECIAL STITCHES
Horizontal half double crochet in back bar (horizontal back bar hdc): Working on back side of indicated st, hdc in horizontal bar directly below top lps. Back bar slip stitch (back bar sl st): Working on back side of indicated st, sl st in horizontal bar directly below top lps.
SPECIAL TECHNIQUE
Remove lp from C hook, insert size 7 steel hook through 12mm bead, pull lp through bead, remove lp from steel hook and replace lp onto C hook.
PLAY SET WAND
Row 1: With E hook and 2 strands diamond, ch 51, sl st in back lp (see Stitch Guide) of 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off diamond. Do not turn (see Pattern Notes). (50 sl sts) Row 2: Join (see Pattern Notes) 1 strand electric blue to back lp of first sl st, ch 2 (see Pattern Notes), hdc in back lp of each st across. Fasten off electric blue. Do not turn. (50 hdc) Row 3: Join 1 strand sky blue to top of beg ch-2, ch 2, horizontal back bar hdc (see Special Stitches) in each st across. Fasten off sky blue. Do not turn.
Row 4: Join 2 strands diamond to top of beg ch-2, back bar sl st (see Special Stitches) in each st across. Fasten off diamond. Do not turn. (50 sl sts)
Row 5: Join 1 strand diamond to first sl st, fold rows 1–4 WS tog with row 4 facing, working back lp of row 4 and, at the same time, in opposite side of foundation ch, sl st in each st across. Fasten off diamond leaving a long tail.
Thread tail through needle and use to sew end closed. Leave opposite end of Wand unsewn. (50 sl sts)
SNOWFLAKE
Make 2.
Rnd 1: With E hook and 2 strands diamond, ch 2, 12 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in first sc. (12 sc)
Rnd 2: [Ch 7, hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, sl st in next ch (point made), ch 5, hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each of next 2 chs, sl st in next ch (tip made), ch 4, hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, sl st in next ch (point
made), hdc in each of last 3 chs of beg ch-7 (spoke completed), sl st in same st as beg ch-7, (sl st, ch 2, sl st) in next st (picot), sl st in next st] 6 times ending with last sl st in same st as base of beg ch-7. Fasten off diamond. (6 spokes, 6 picots)
WAND ASSEMBLY
1. Using one strand diamond and needle, sew 1 blue 10mm bead centered between points and tip of each spoke, 1 jingle bell to Snowflake center, sew side points between spokes tog to join. Rep for 2nd Snowflake. 2. Place Snowflakes WS tog, whip
stitch (see illustration) around outer edges of 5 spokes. Place a small amount of hot glue onto one end of dowel, insert into 6th spoke opening at Snowflake bottom up through corresponding spoke tip at Snowflake top. Sew 1 crystal 10mm bead to each side point joins between all 6 spokes. 3. Place small amount of hot glue on opposite dowel end and insert into Wand, having top edge slightly under 6th Snowflake spoke. Twist Wand into desired spiral and apply a small amount of hot glue to Wand under Snowflake spoke tip to secure spiral twist. 4. Fold various lengths of desired ribbons in half, tie a knot around center fold with a 12-inch length of diamond, thread ends through needle to sew ribbon center under 6th spoke tip and side edges of spoke to Wand top.
CROWN Ribbing
Row 1: Using 2 strands fun fur and 1 strand diamond with E hook, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (4 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Rep last row until piece measures approximately 17–18 inches or until piece when slightly stretched measures 19–20 inches or desired length to fit child’s head. Fold short ends of Ribbing tog and sl st across short ends to form a ring. Fasten off. Use safety pins to divide one long edge into fourths for upper crown.
Upper crown
Rnd 1: With C hook, join (see
Pattern Notes) 2 strands diamond to marked long edge at center back seam, ch 1, work 25 sc evenly sp between each marker, join in first sc of rnd. (100 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join in first sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in each of next 5 sts, using blue 12mm beads, add a bead (see
Special Technique), ch 1, sk next 4 sts, [sc in each of next 6 sts, add a bead, ch 1, sk next 4 sts] around, join in first sc of rnd. (60 sc and 10 beads)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, using crystal 12mm beads, add a bead, (do not ch-1), sk 4 sts, sc in next st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in
back bar (see illustration) of ch-1 behind bead, [sc in next st, add bead, (do not ch-1), sk 4 sts, sc in next st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in back bar of ch-1 behind bead] around, join to first sc. Fasten off. (60 sts and 10 beads)
