size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle

GAUGE

22 sts = 7 inches; 7 rows = 3 inches in Block

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Chain-3 at beginning of row counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Shell: 3 dc in indicated st or sp. Single crochet join (sc join): Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo and draw up a lp, yo and pull through both lps on hook.

BLANKET BLOCK

Row 1 (RS): Ch 23, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch across, turn. (22 sc) Row 2: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), sk first sc, dc in each rem st across, turn. (22 dc) Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Rows 4–11: [Rep rows 2 and 3] 4 times. Fasten off after last row.

Edging

With RS facing and working in ends of rows, join (see Pattern

Notes) cherry red in first row, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same row, *[sk next dc row, shell (see Special

Stitches) in next sc row] 4 times, sk last dc row, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in last sc row*, working in last row, [sk next 2 sc, shell in next sc] 6 times, sk next 2 sc, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in corner st, working in ends of rows, rep between *, working in opposite side of foundation ch, [sk next 2 chs, shell in next ch] 6 times, sk next 2 chs, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in corner ch, join in top of beg ch-3. Tree

Make 7. Row 1 (RS): With green, ch 4, 2 dc in 4th ch from hook (beg sk chs count as first dc), turn. (3 dc) Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (3 sc) Row 3: Ch 3, dc in first sc, dc in each sc to last sc, 2 dc in last sc, turn. (5 dc) Rows 4–9: [Rep rows 2 and 3] 3 times, turn. (11 dc) Row 10: Rep row 2, turn. Do not fasten off.

Tree Border

Ch 1, 3 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 9 sc, 3 sc in last sc, *working in ends of rows, work 15 sc evenly sp* to foundation ch, (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in opposite side of foundation ch, rep between * across other edge to beg sc, join in beg sc. Fasten off, leaving 1 yd for sewing. (49 sc, 1 ch-1 sp) Refer to photo as a guide and embroider cross stitches (see illustrati­on) with gold and cherry red to decorate Tree. Sew a Tree to each white Block.

Snowman Body

Rnd 1: Ch 4, 15 dc in 4th ch from hook (beg sk chs count as first dc), join in top of beg ch-3. (16 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in each st around, join. Fasten off, leaving 12-inch tail for sewing. (32 dc)

Head

Rnd 1: Ch 4, 15 dc in 4th ch from hook (beg sk chs count as first dc), join in top of beg ch-3. (16 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st as joining, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 7 times, sc in last st, join in beg sc. Fasten off, leaving 8-inch tail for sewing. (24 sc)

Refer to photo as a guide and embroider cross stitch eyes with black and cross stitch nose with carrot. With black, backstitch

(see illustrati­on) smile. Place edge of Body so that it overlaps Row 2 of Head for 3 sts. Sew across these 3 sts to form neck.

Scarf

With cherry red, leaving 6-inch tail, ch 25. Fasten off, leaving 6-inch tail. Place Scarf on flat surface, then lay Snowman on Scarf. Insert hook in 10th ch from beg tail. Wrap opposite end around neck, yo end tail and draw Scarf through lp on hook. Backstitch Scarf to Body with beg and end tails.

Hat

Row 1 (RS): With black, ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch across, turn. (9 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, sl st in front lps (see Stitch Guide) of first 3 sts, sc in each of next 3 sts, leave rem sts unworked, turn. (3 sc) Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, do not turn. Working down side edge of piece, sl st in ends of rows 3 and 2, working across unworked sts of row 1, sl st in front lp of each st. Fasten off, leaving 8-inch length of yarn for sewing. Refer to photo as guide, place bottom of Body to lower edge of blue Block and sew in place. Sew Hat on each Head.

ASSEMBLY

Refer to Placement Diagram (see illustrati­on), with cherry red, whipstitch through back lps (see illustrati­on) to join Blocks tog.

BORDER

Join cherry red in any corner, ch 1, *3 sc in corner, sc in each st to next corner, rep from * around, join in beg sc. Fasten off.
