Eyes & Mouth: Using black yarn, make eyes and mouth using short straight stitches (see illustration). Straight Stitch Nose: Using orange yarn, make a short straight stitch for the nose, going over it twice to give it a little depth. Buttons: Using black yarn, embroider 3 French knots (see illus

tration) on each of Middle Ball and Bottom Ball.

French Knot

Scarf: Using red, leaving about 11/2-inch tail, ch 25, fasten off leaving about 11/2-inch tail. Cut 1 piece of yarn 3 inches long. Using the crochet hook, pull it halfway through the last ch of the scarf end. Tie a knot over end of scarf and fringe piece to make 3 pieces of fringe. Rep for opposite end of scarf. Tie scarf around neck of Snowman. Snow Chain: Embroider a wavy line of chain stitches (see illustration) across the bottom over rows 2–4 of the Stocking from right side to left side as desired or as shown on the Stocking. ASSEMBLY With white, whipstitch (see illus

tration) Snowman to the Stocking placing it above the crochet chain stitches. Attach the Snowball with a whipstitch placing it above the crochet chain stitches as desired.

Whipstitch

Arms: With brown, pull up from back to front to the upper side of the Middle Ball. About 1 inch out from the Middle Ball go back through the Stocking. Pull up about 1/4 inch from where the end of the arm is and go back down at the end of the arm to make “fingers”. Make 2 more fingers the same way. Rep for opposite arm.

Snowflakes: With white, make simple straight stitch snowflakes by pulling up randomly through the Stocking and pushing needle down about 1/2 inch from where inserted. Rep pulling thread up and off to the side middle of first stitch crossing over the first stitch and inserting back down on opposite side of beg st. Do the same in an “x” pattern across the first two stitches. Snowflakes can continue to be added without fastening off until more thread is needed. Place as many flakes on the Stocking sides as desired staying down from the top of the Stocking about 3 inches where the cuff will lay when added. Length of the stitches in the snowflakes isn’t important, make desired size. Joining Stocking: Hold wrong sides of Stocking together. Join dark sage with a sl st in the top of the Stocking at the front left top. Ch 1, sc through both layers of the Stocking evenly down the side across the bottom and back up to the top. Ch 10, sl st back into the top of the Stocking at the base of the ch-10 to form a lp to hang. Fasten off. Weave in loose ends securely to keep lp from pulling loose when hanging. Cuff With front side of Stocking facing, join white in first double crochet to the left of the hanging loop of Stocking in back side piece.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same st. [Ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc] around top of Stocking. Fold the hanging loop inside while working on the cuff to keep it out of the way until the cuff is complete and folded down over the top of the Stocking. Hanger will pop back up then and be on the inside of the Stocking. Join in beg sc. (34 ch-1 sps) Rnd 2: Sl st in ch-1 sp. Shell (see Special Stitch) in next ch-1 sp. Sc in next ch-1 sp. *Shell in next ch-1 sp. Sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * around. Join in beg sc. (17 shells) Rnds 3–5: Sl st in ch-1 sp of first shell. (Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in ch-1 sp of same shell. (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in ch-1 sp of each shell around. Join in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off after rnd 5. Block.
