• Red Heart Super Saver medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (solids: 7 oz/ 364 yds/198g per skein; prints and multis: 5 oz/236 yds/ 141g per skein): 1 skein each #672 spring green, #376 burgundy, #312 black, #254 pumpkin, #311 white and #3955 wildflower • Red Heart With Love medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (7 oz/370 yds/198g per skein): 1 skein each #1805 bluebell

and #1814 true blue • Sizes E/4/3.5mm, F/5/3.75mm and H/8/5mm crochet hooks or sizes needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle • Sewing needle • Black sewing thread • 11mm black buttons: 6 • 1/2-inch black oval buttons: 2 • 1/2-inch light blue glitter

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Chain-3 at beginning of row or round counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated. Chain-2 at beginning of round counts as first half double crochet unless otherwise stated. Do not join rounds; place stitch marker and move marker as work progresses.

PLACE MAT MITTEN

Make 3. Row 1: With size F hook and green, ch 12, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (11 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn. (13 sc) Row 3: Rep row 2. (15 sc) Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Rows 5 & 6: Rep row 4. Row 7: Rep row 2. (17 sc) Row 8: Rep row 4. Row 9: Ch 1, sc in each of next 13 sc, leaving rem 4 sc unworked (for thumb), turn. Row 10: Rep row 4. Thumb

Row 1: With WS facing, join (see Pattern Notes) green in end sc of row 8, sk next sc, 4 dc in next sc, sk next sc, sl st in same sc as last sc of row 9 of Mitten, turn. (1 sl st, 4 dc, 1 sl st) Row 2: Do not ch 1, sc in each of next 4 dc, sl st in same sc as previous sl st. Fasten off.

Cuff

Make 3. Row 1: With size F hook and burgundy, ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (10 sc) Row 2: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), dc in each sc across, turn. (10 dc)

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first dc, sc in each of next 8 dc, 2 sc in last sc, leaving 8-inch length of yarn, fasten off. (12 sc)

Button

Make 3. With size F hook and green, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in first sc. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY

With burgundy, sew Button to center of Cuff making an “X” through center of Button. With length of burgundy, embroider 4 straight stitches (see illustrati­on) to make snowflake centered over rows 8–11 of Mitten.

With length of burgundy, embroider blanket stitch (see illustra

tion) around outer edge of Mitten, but do not embroider across opposite side of foundation ch. Overlappin­g row 1 of Mitten, position row 3 of Cuff on Mitten and sew in place.

SNOWMAN FACE

Make 3. Rows 1–8: With size F hook and white, rep rows 1–8 of Mitten. (17 sc) Row 9: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Row 10: Rep row 9. Row 11: Ch 1, sc dec in next 2 sc, sc in each sc across to last 2 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc, turn. (15 sc)

Rows 12 & 13: Rep row 11. (11 sc) Row 14: Rep row 9. Row 15: Rep row 11. (9 sc) Row 16: Rep row 11. Fasten off. (7 sc)

Hat

Make 3. Row 1: With size F hook and black, ch 21, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (20 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, fasten off, turn.

Row 3: Sk first 4 sc of row 2, join black with sc in next sc, sc in each of next 11 sc, leaving rem 4 sc unworked, turn. (12 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each of next 3 sc, hdc in each of next 6 sc, sc in each of next 3 sc. Fasten off.

Hatband

Make 2 green & 1 burgundy. With size F hook, ch 15. Fasten off.

Nose

Make 3. Row 1: With size F hook and pumpkin, ch 3 (does not count as dc), sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, turn. (2 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Row 3: Ch 1, sc dec in next 2 sc, turn. (1 sc) Row 4: Ch 1, sc in sc, leaving 8-inch length, fasten off.

Mouth

Make 3. Cut 4-inch length of black, tie double knot in each end of strand. Trim ends close to knot.

ASSEMBLY

Sew ends of Hatband to Hat between rows 2 and 3; secure rem of Hatband with glue. With length of white, embroider straight stitches for snowflake near end of Hatband. Sew Hat to top of Snowman Face overlappin­g row 16. Sew Nose to center of Face. Leaving 1/2-inch sp between eyes, sew 2 11mm black buttons centered on rows 12 and 13. Glue Mouth centered between rows 3–7. Allow all glued sections time to dry.

SQUARES

Make 3 each bluebell & true blue.

Rnd 1: With size F hook, ch 4, join to form a ring, ch 3, 2 dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (12 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)

Rnds 2–5: Ch 3, dc in each dc around, working (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each corner ch-2 sp, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (76 dc, 4 ch-2 sps) Rnd 6: With size E hook, ch 2

(see Pattern Notes), hdc in each dc around, working (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in each corner ch-2 sp, join in beg ch-2. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY

With length of matching yarn color, use running stitch (see

illustrati­on) to sew Snowman Faces centered on true blue Squares and Mittens centered on bluebell Squares. When attaching Mittens use care to work running stitches in behind the blanket stitch around edge of Mitten so as not to distort the decorative edging. Lay out Squares left to right as follows for Place Mat: First row: Snowman Face with green Hatband, Mitten and Snowman Face with green Hatband. 2nd row: Mitten, Snowman Face with burgundy Hatband and Mitten. With WS of Squares tog and matching yarn whipstitch (see illustrati­on) Squares tog in back lp (see Stitch Guide) of each st.

Border

Rnd 1: With size H hook, join wildflower with sc in any corner ch-2 sp, 2 sc in same ch-2 sp, working in back lp of each st, sc in each st around outer edge of Place Mat, working 3 sc in each rem corner ch-2 sp, join in beg sc. Fasten off.

Rnd 2: Join green with sc in center corner sc, 2 sc in same sc, [sk next sc, 3 sc in next sc] around entire outer edge of Place Mat, adjusting sts as needed to work 3 sc in each center corner sc, join in beg sc. Fasten off.

SNOWMAN FLATWARE HOLDER HEAD

Make 4. Rnd 1: With size F hook and white, ch 2 (does not count as hdc), 8 sc in ring, place stitch marker (see Pattern Notes). Rnd 2: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (12 sc) Rnds 3 & 4: Rep rnd 2. (27 sc) Rnd 5: Rep rnd 2, sl st in next sc. Fasten off. (40 sc)

BODY

Make 4. Rnds 1–4: Rep rnds 1–4 of Head. (27 sc)

Rnd 5: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (40 sc)

Rnd 6: Sc in each sc around, sl st in next sc. Fasten off. (40 sc)

SCARF

With size F hook and wildflower, ch 45, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each rem ch across. Fasten off.

EARMUFF

Make 2. With size F hook and wildflower, ch 4, *yo twice, insert hook in 4th ch from hook, yo, draw up lp, [yo, draw through 2 lps on hook] twice, rep from * 5 times, yo, draw through all 7 lps on hook. Fasten off.

EARMUFF BAND

With size F hook and green, ch 12. Fasten off.

HEAD & BODY ASSEMBLY

[With white, whipstitch Head and Body tog across 9 sc to form neck area] 4 times, set 2nd–4th Head and Body sections aside. Working on the Head and Body front, with length of black, embroider French knot (see illustrati­on) for eyes, wrapping yarn 5 times around needle and centered between rnds 2 and 3 of Head with 1/4- inch sp between eyes. For nose, with pumpkin, embroider French knot, wrapping yarn 4 times around needle and centered on rnd 1. Use photo as guide for placement of facial features and oval buttons. Cut length of black 3 inches long, tie knot on each end, adjusting knots so mouth is 13/4 inches long. Glue mouth in smiling shape between rnds 2 and 3 centered below nose. With needle and thread, sew oval buttons centered to front of Body leaving 3/8- inch sp between buttons. Work the following steps to join all 4 Body and Head sections. The top opening is formed to insert the flatware in pocket formed at top of head.

A. Position first 2 Head and Body sections tog with face facing up and WS tog. Position rem 3rd and 4th Head and Body section tog with WS tog.

B. Starting at halfway point of right edge of Head, working through front 2 thicknesse­s of Head only, whipstitch to opposite side of Head halfway around;

C. Now working through all 4 thicknesse­s, whipstitch down rem portion of Head around entire Body and up Head to beg point of front section.

D. Now working on rem 2 back sections of Head, working through both thicknesse­s, whipstitch across sts to join at left edge, knot to secure, fasten off rem length. Glue Earmuff Band to top edge of Head, making sure edges are even and it is centered on top half of Head, using a small thin line of glue around edges of band. Allow glue to dry. Sew Earmuff to each side of Head overlappin­g end of Earmuff Band slightly. Apply glue to front underside of Earmuff and hold in place for a moment so that Earmuff tilts toward face. Tie Scarf around neck and secure to front of Body with glue on back of Scarf sections about halfway down. Glue a pompom to each end of Scarf. Insert flatware in pocket through the top of the Snowman.
