• Lizbeth size 10 crochet cotton (122 yds per ball): 1 ball each #601 white

and #670 Victorian red • Size 8/1.50mm steel

crochet hook • Embroidery needle • Fabric stiffener • Wax paper • Craft glue • Stitch marker

Gauge not necessary for this project.

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Do not join rounds unless otherwise stated. Use stitch marker to mark beginning of rounds and move marker each round as work progresses. Chain-3 at beginning of row counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated.

ORNAMENT SKIRT PANEL

Make 3. Rnd 1 (RS): With white, ch 21, join (see Pattern Notes) in first ch to form lp.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sl st in each of next 5 chs, ch 21, sk next 16 chs, sl st in each of last 5 chs, sl st in first sl st.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sl st in each of next 5 sl sts, sl st in each of next 5 chs, ch 21, sk next 16 chs, sl st in each of next 5 chs, sl st in each of next 5 sl sts. Fasten off.

Rnd 4: With RS facing join with sl st in beg of last ch sp, sc in each of next 10 chs, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) around next ch, sc in each of next 10 chs. Fasten off.

TOP WING

Make 2. Rnds 1 & 2: Rep rnds 1 and 2 of Skirt.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sl st in first 5 sl sts, sc in each of next 10 chs, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) around next ch, sc in each of next 10 chs, join in beg sl st. Fasten off.

BOTTOM WING

Make 2. Rnd 1: Ch 11, join to form a lp. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sl st in first ch, sl st in each of next 2 chs, ch 11, sk next 5 chs, sl st in first sl st. Fasten off.

HEAD

Rnd 1: With white leaving a 2-inch length at beg, make a slip ring (see illustration), 6 sc in slip ring, place marker (see Pattern Notes). Pull beg length gently to close opening. Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc) Rnd 3: Rep rnd 2, sl st in next sc. Fasten off. (24 sc)

HEART

Row 1: Beg at bottom of Heart, with red, ch 4, 2 dc in 4th ch from hook (3 sk chs count as first dc), turn. (3 dc) Row 2: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), dc in same st as beg ch-3, 2 dc in each of next 2 dc, turn. (6 dc) Row 3: Ch 2, beg in same st as beg ch-2, dc dec (see Stitch Guide) in next 3 dc, ch 2, sl st in same st as last dc of dec (first lobe), sl st in next dc, ch 2, dc dec in next 3 dc, ch 2, sl st in same st as last dc of dec (2nd lobe). Fasten off.

FINISHING

Steam-block pieces and let dry completely. Thoroughly saturate Skirt Panels and Wing pieces in fabric stiffener. Place on wax paper and arrange sps even. Let dry completely. Using photo as a guide, glue 3 Skirt Panel pieces tog overlapping slightly. Glue Top and Bottom Wing pieces tog. Glue Wings to Skirt at center. Glue Head on top of Wings. Glue Heart just below Head. For hanger, glue a length of white to back of Head.
