Child instructio­ns given to fit size 4 years; changes for 6 years, 8 years and 10 years are in [ ]. Preteen sizes 12 and 14 are the same as Adult X-small and small. Adult instructio­ns given to fit size X-small; changes for small, medium, large and X-large are in first set of [ ], 2X-large, 3X-large, 4X-large and 5X-large are in second set of [ ]. GAUGE

12 sts = 4 inches, 12 rows = 4 inches Establishe­d pattern is [sc in each dc, dc in each sc] across. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

CHILD VEST BACK

Row 1 (RS): Loosely ch 43 [45, 47, 49], dc in 4th ch from hook (3 sk chs count as first dc), dc in each rem ch across, turn. (41 [43, 45, 47] dc)

Row 2 (WS): Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), bpdc (see Stitch Guide) in next st, [dc in next st, bpdc in next st] across, ending with dc in top of ch-3 (see Pattern Notes), turn. Row 3: Ch 3, [ fpdc (see Stitch Guide) in next st, dc in next st] across working last dc in top of ch-3, turn.

Rows 4 & 5: Rep rows 2 and 3. Row 6: Rep row 2. Row 7: Ch 3, [sc in next st, dc in next st] across, turn.

Row 8: Ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, [dc in next sc, sc in next dc] across, turn. Rep rows 7 and 8 until piece measures 71/2 [81/2, 91/2, 101/2] inches, ending with a WS row.

Armhole Shaping

Row 1 (RS): Sl st in each of first 3 sts, ch 1, place marker in ch made to mark first st on row, [sc in next dc, dc in next sc] across to last 4 sts, sc in next dc, sl st in next sc, turn. (37 [39, 41, 43] sts) Row 2: Sl st in first sc, sc in next dc (place marker in sc made to mark first st on row), [dc in next sc, sc in next dc] across to last sc and ch-1 sp with stitch marker, turn. (33 [35, 37, 39] sts) Row 3: Ch 3, [sc in next dc, dc in next sc] across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, [dc in next sc, sc in next dc] across, turn. Work even in establishe­d pattern (see Pattern Notes) until Armhole measures 6 [61/2, 7, 71/2] inches, ending with a WS row. Fasten off.

FRONT

Work as for Back until Armholes measure 2 [21/2, 3, 31/2] inches, ending with a WS row.
