Add a new twist to Tunisian crochet. By “breaking the rules” and turning your work after the forward pass, you’ll create an interesting reversible cowl that is not only fun to make but will add a pretty touch to your fall wardrobe.

MATERIALS
• Red Heart With Love medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (7 oz/ 370 yds/198g per skein): 1 skein each #1303 Aran
and #1542 aubergine • Size L/11/8mm Tunisian crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle • Jumbo locking stitch marker

11 sts = 4 inches; 7 rows = 4 inches
PATTERN NOTES
Each row in Tunisian crochet consists of two parts: a Forward Pass in which stitches are picked up and a Return Pass in which stitches are worked off the hook. Each Forward Pass will be worked with aubergine. Each Return Pass will be worked with Aran. Carry unused color alongside edges; do not fasten off until so stated. Scarf is worked flat, then short ends are joined. Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.
SPECIAL STITCHES
Work loops off hook (work lps off hook): Ch 1 (see A of illustration), [yo, pull through
2 lps on hook (see B of illustration)] across.
Tunisian double stitch (Tds):
Yo, with yarn in back, insert hook under front vertical bar from side to side, yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook.
Tunisian simple stitch (Tss):
With yarn in back, insert hook under front vertical bar from side to side, yo, draw up a lp (see illustration).
Tunisian purl stitch (Tps):
Bring yarn to front, insert hook under next front vertical bar as if to work Tss, bring yarn across front of vertical bar and to back, yo, draw up a lp (see illustration).
Tunisian reverse stitch (Trs):
With yarn in back, insert hook under back strand of next vertical bar, yo, draw up a lp.
SCARF
Row 1 Forward Pass (WS): With aubergine (see Pattern Notes), ch 120, working in back
bar of chs (see illustration), pick up a lp in 2nd ch from hook and each rem ch across, leaving all lps on hook, drop aubergine. (120 sts) Row 1 Return Pass: With Aran, work lps off hook (see Special Stitches). Transfer rem lp to locking stitch marker. Row 2 Forward Pass (RS): Turn, insert hook under front
bar of first st, yo and draw aubergine through st, ch 1, *2 Tds (see Special Stitches) under next st, sk next st, rep from * working 1 Tds under final st, drop aubergine. (120 sts)
Row 2 Return Pass: Transfer Aran from stitch marker to hook, work lps off hook. Transfer rem lp to locking stitch marker.
Row 3 Forward Pass: Turn, insert hook under front bar of first st, yo and draw aubergine through st, Tss (see Special
Stitches) in each st across, drop aubergine. (120 sts) Row 3 Return Pass: Transfer Aran from stitch marker to hook, do not ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across. Transfer rem lp to locking stitch marker.
Row 4 Forward Pass: Turn, insert hook under front vertical bar of first st, yo and draw aubergine through st, Tps (see
Special Stitches) in each st until 1 rem, Tss in final st, drop aubergine. (120 sts) Row 4 Return Pass: Rep Row 3 Return Pass.
Row 5: Rep Row 2 Forward Pass and Return Pass. Row 6 Forward Pass: Turn, insert hook under front bar of first st, yo and draw aubergine through st, Trs (see Special
Stitches) in each st until 1 rem, Tss in final st, drop aubergine. (120 sts) Row 6 Return Pass: Rep Row 3 Return Pass.
Row 7: Rep Row 4 Forward Pass and Return Pass. Rows 8–11: Rep Rows 2–5. Fasten off Aran, leaving a 16-inch tail at conclusion of Row 11. Bind Off: Turn, insert hook under front bar of first st, yo and draw aubergine through st, ch 1, *sl st as if to Tss in next st, ch 1, sk next st, rep from * across, ending sl st in final st, fasten off leaving a 16-inch tail. FINISHING With aubergine tail and tapestry needle, working in ends of matching rows, whipstitch (see
illustration) short ends of scarf tog. With Aran tail and tapestry needle, connect ends of return portion of rows with a matching whipstitch, while at the same time keeping wrong side of work as neat as possible.
