• Premier Yarns Deborah Norville Serenity Chunky bulky (chunky) weight acrylic yarn (31/2 oz/109 yds/ 100g per skein): 2 skeins each #500-06 berry

burst, #600-06 chocolate • Size L/11/8mm crochet hook or

size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle • 21/2-inch buttons: 2 • Stitch markers

GAUGE

2 ext sc = 1 inch; Rows 3–5 = 1 inch

PATTERN NOTES

Mark first stitch of row. Move marker up as work progresses. Work the chain-6 loops with a tighter tension.

SPECIAL STITCH

Extended single crochet (ext

sc): Insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull up a lp, yo, pull through 1 lp on hook (ch-1 completed), yo, pull through 2 lps on hook.

COWL

Make 1 in each color. Row 1 (WS): Ch 44, working in back bar of ch (see illustrati­on), ext sc (see Special Stitch) in 3rd ch from hook (2 sk chs do not count as a st) and in each ch across. Turn. (42 ext sc) Row 2 (RS): Ch 1. Sc in front lp only (see Stitch Guide) of first st, * ch 6 (see Pattern Notes), sc in front lp only of next st. Rep from * across. Turn. (42 sc, 41 ch-6 lps)

Note: When working ext sc rows, make sure ch lps from previous row lay to the RS of piece.

Row 3: Ch 1. Ext sc in unworked lp of each ext sc 2 rows below. Turn. (42 ext sc)

Rows 4–6: [Rep rows 2 and 3] 1 time. Rep row 2 once more.

Row 7: Ch 1. Ext sc in unworked lp only of each ext sc 2 rows below across until 6 sts rem. Sk 2 ext sc, ch 2 (Buttonhole made). Ext sc in unworked lp only of each of rem 4 ext sc 2 rows below. Turn. (40 ext sc, 1 ch-2 sp)
