MATERIALS

• Bernat Maker Home Dec bulky (chunky) weight cotton/nylon yarn (83/4 oz/317 yds/250g per ball): 6 balls #111008 clay 2 balls #111012 black 1 ball #111006 steel blue • Size J/10/6mm crochet hook or

size needed to obtain gauge • Size G/6/4mm crochet hook • Blunt yarn needle

GAUGE

Size J hook: 7 sc = 3 inches; 3 shells = 3 inches; 4 shell rows = 21/2 inches

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Wind steel blue into 3 equal balls. Wind 1 ball of black into 2 balls. Hold 3 strands of yarn together throughout unless otherwise indicated. Use size J hook unless otherwise indicated. When changing colors, leave yarn strands each 3 inches long, do not knot these strands; with size G hook weave invisibly back through the stitches of same color row. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCH

Shell: (Sc, ch 2, sc) in indicated st or sp.

BASKET BOTTOM

Row 1: With size J hook and clay, ch 25, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (24 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Rows 3–36: Rep row 2. At the end of row 36, do not turn.

FIRST LONG SIDE EDGE

Row 1: Working across ends of rows, ch 1, shell (see Special

Stitch) in side edge of row 35, [sk next 2 rows, shell in next row, sk 1 row, shell in next row] 6 times, sk next 2 rows, shell in side edge of row 2, turn. (14 shells) Row 2: Ch 1, shell in each ch-2 sp across, turn. (14 shells) Rows 3–6: Rep row 2. At the end of last row, change color (see Stitch Guide and Pattern Notes) to steel blue, fasten off clay. Row 7: Rep row 2. Row 8: Rep row 2, change color to black, fasten off steel blue.

Row 9: Rep row 2, change color to steel blue, fasten off black.

Row 10: Rep row 2, change color to clay, fasten off steel blue.

Rows 11–26: Rep row 2. At the end of last row, fasten off.

FIRST SHORT SIDE EDGE

Row 1: Join (see Pattern Notes) clay in first sc of row 36, ch 1, shell in same sc as beg ch-1, [sk next 2 sc, shell in next sc, sk next sc, shell in next sc] 4 times, sk next 2 sc, shell in next sc, turn. (10 shells) Rows 2–26: Rep rows 2–26 of Long Side Edge. (10 shells)

2ND LONG SIDE EDGE

Row 1: Working across ends of rows, ch 1, shell in side edge of row 2, [sk next 2 rows, shell in next row, sk 1 row, shell in next row] 6 times, sk next 2 rows, shell in side edge of row 35, turn. (14 shells) Rows 2–26: Rep rows 2–26 of First Long Side Edge.

2ND SHORT SIDE EDGE

Row 1: Working across opposite side edge of foundation ch, join clay in first foundation ch, ch 1, shell in same ch as beg ch-1, [sk next 2 chs, shell in next ch, sk next ch, shell in next ch] 4 times, sk next 2 chs, shell in next ch, turn. (10 shells) Rows 2–26: Rep rows 2–26 of Long Side Edge. (10 shells)

JOINING

With WS facing, holding Long Side Edge to Short Edge and working through both thicknesse­s, changing color as colors change and with size G hook, join 1 strand of clay in base of row 1 of Edges, sl st evenly sp to top edge, ending in side edge of row 26. Fasten off. Rep joining on rem 3 Edges.

BLACK CUFF BORDER

Rnd 1: With RS facing and size J hook, join 3 strands of black in first ch-2 sp beyond joining of Edges, ch 1, shell in same ch-2 sp as beg ch-1, shell in each rem ch-2 sp around, join in beg sc, turn. (48 shells) Rnd 2: Sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 1, shell in same ch-2 sp, shell in each ch-2 sp around, join in beg sc, do not turn. Rnd 3: Sl st in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp, *sc in next ch-2 sp, [ch 3, sc] twice in

same ch-2 sp**, sc in next ch-2 sp, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in beg sc. Fasten off.

Row 1: With size J hook and 3 strands clay, ch 44, shell in 2nd ch from hook, [sk next 2 chs, shell in next ch] 14 times, turn. (15 shells)

Row 2: Ch 1, shell in each ch-2 sp across, do not turn.

Row 3: Ch 2, working across opposite side of foundation ch, sl st in ch at base of first shell, [ch 2, sk next 2 chs of foundation ch, sl st in ch at base of next shell] across. Fasten off.

Attaching Handles

Fold to outer edge the Black Cuff Border and next 4 rows of clay. Position Handles on Long Side Edge, positionin­g each end of Handle on 5th shell in from each outer edge. With a length of clay, sew 21/2 inches of each end of Handle to inside of Basket.
