PATTERN NOTES

Hold 2 strands together throughout. Weave in loose ends as work progresses. When instructed to turn away, turn work counterclockwise from right to left away from one’s body. When instructed to turn, turn work clockwise from right to left toward the body. Chain-2 at beginning of row counts as first half double crochet unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

Change color: Work last hdc to last 3 lps on hook, with new color in front of old color, yo with new color and pull through all lps on hook. WS Row Hidden Yarn Tails Technique: With WS facing and new color lp on hook, slide hook under old color, yo with new color and pull through lp on hook to complete the first ch-1 of new row. Ch-1 once more and continue working the pattern across the row.

RS Row Hidden Yarn Tails

Technique: With RS facing, drop new color lp from hook, insert hook in “leg” of first st of last row, yo with old color and pull up a lp, pick up new color lp on hook and pull through old color lp, bring old color to WS between lp on hook and working yarn. Gently tighten colors as necessary to maintain correct tension. Ch 2 with new color and continue working the pattern across the row.

Change color at end of every row in this order: Earthy Denim Warm brown

Row 1 (RS): With 2 strands (see Pattern Notes) earthy, ch 93, hdc in 3rd ch from hook (sk 2 chs count as first hdc), [ch 1, sk next ch, hdc in next ch] across, with new color in front of old color, change color (see Special Techniques) to denim in last hdc of row, turn away (see Pattern Notes). Place safety pin in middle of row to mark RS. (47 hdc, 45 ch-1 sps) Row 2 (WS): Work WS Row Hidden Yarn Tails Technique (see Special Techniques), completing beg ch-2 (see Pattern Notes) with new color, hdc in

first ch-1 sp, [ch 1, hdc in next ch-1 sp] across, ending with ch 1, sk next hdc, hdc in top of beg ch-2, change color to warm brown in last st of row, turn (see Pattern Notes). (47 hdc, 45 ch-1 sps) Row 3 (RS): Work RS Row Hidden Yarn Tails Technique (see Special Techniques), completing beg ch-2 with new color, hdc in first ch-1 sp, [ch 1, hdc in next ch-1 sp] across, ending with ch 1, sk next hdc, hdc in top of beg ch-2, change color to earthy in last st of row, turn away.

Rows 4–55: [Rep rows 2 and 3 alternately] 26 times, changing color at end of each row (see

Color Sequence), ending with changing color to denim in last st of row 55. Fasten off earthy.

Row 56: Ch 2, hdc in first ch-1 sp, [ch 1, hdc in next ch-1 sp] across, ending with ch 1, sk next hdc, hdc in top of beg ch-2, change color to warm brown in last st of row, turn. Fasten off denim.

FINISHING

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 2, hdc in first ch-1 sp, [ch 1, hdc in next ch-1 sp] across to last 2 sts, ending with ch 1, sk next hdc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in top of beg ch-2, [ch 1, hdc] evenly sp in ends of rows across, working in opposite side of foundation ch, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in first ch, ch 1, [hdc in next ch, ch 1, sk next ch] across to last ch, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in last ch, [ch 1, hdc] evenly sp in ends of rows to top row, (hdc, ch 1) in same st as base of beg ch-2, join to top of beg ch-2. Fasten off.
