12½split sc = 4 inches; 8 split sc rnds = 2 inches
PATTERN NOTES
Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Do not join unless otherwise indicated. Place stitch marker on last stitch of round and move as work progresses. Only front of Hot Pad has a chart. Each square on chart equals 1 split single crochet.

sc): Insert hook in V of sc st, yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through both lps on hook.
HOT PAD
Rnd 1 (RS): With wine, ch 85, using care not to twist ch, join (see Pattern Notes) in first ch, ch 1, sc in same ch as beg ch-1, working in back bar of ch (see illustration) sc in each ch around to last ch, hdc in last ch, change color (see Stitch Guide) to ecru, mark hdc with st marker (see Pattern Notes) as last st. (85 sts) Rnd 2: Split sc (see Special Stitch) in each st around. Rnd 3: Rep rnd 2. Rnds 4–48: Split sc in each st as indicated in chart (see Pattern
Notes) on page 59 across first 43 sts changing colors as indicated (front), continue with wine, split sc in each rem 42 sts (back). At the end of rnd 48, fasten off.
FINISHING
Block Hot Pad with image at center front. Working in back
lps (see Stitch Guide) with a length of wine, sew top and bottom edges closed. CW
