• Bernat Baby Sport light (DK) weight acrylic yarn (12 oz/1256 yds/350g per skein): 1 [1, 2, 2] skein(s) #21048 baby grey

• Size D/3/3.25mm [E/4/3.5mm, F/5/3.75mm, G/6/4mm] crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

• 9mm [12mm, 16mm, 18mm] buttons: 8

• Elastic sewing thread

• Sewing needle and thread

• Tapestry needle

GAUGE

Size D hook: 5 hdc = 1 inch; 13 rows = 4 inches

Size E hook: 7 hdc = 11/2 inches; 3 rows = 1 inch

Size F hook: 6 hdc = 11/2 inches; 3 rows = 1 inch

Size G hook: 15 hdc = 4 inches; 5 rows = 2 inches Take time to check gauge.

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Use crochet hook size D for size 6 months–1 year, E for size 2, F for size 4 and G for size 6. Chain-1 loosely at beginning of each row for remainder of Sweater unless otherwise stated. Join with slip stitch unless otherwise stated.

Hood Trim

Notes) 1 strand each yarn and elastic sewing thread in side edge of row 47 [47, 51, 55], ch 1, work 74 sc evenly sp around edge of Hood, turn. (74 sc)

Row 2 (WS): [Fpdc around next sc, bpdc around next sc] across, leaving a 3-inch length of elastic sewing thread, fasten off elastic sewing thread only, turn.

Row 3 (RS): [Fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st] across. Fasten off. With tapestry needle and length of yarn, sew side edge of Hood Trim to edge of Sweater neckline. Weave in rem 3-inch length of elastic sewing thread.

FRONT OPENING TRIM Left Front Button Edge

Row 1: Join yarn at neckline edge in side edge of row 46 [46, 50, 54], ch 1, work 69 [69, 69, 76] sc evenly sp down front to bottom, turn. (69, [69, 69, 76] sc) Rows 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Row 5: Sl st in each sc across. Fasten off.

Right Buttonhole Edge

Row 1: Join yarn in side edge of row 1 at bottom, ch 1, work 69 [69, 69, 76] sc evenly sp up front, turn. (69, [69, 69, 76] sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 sc, (ch 2, sk each of next 2 sc, sc in next 7 [7, 7, 8] sc) 7 times, ch 2, sk each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, turn. (8 buttonhole­s)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc and each ch across, turn. (69 [69, 69, 76] sc) Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 5: Sl st in each sc across. Fasten off.

FINISHING

With WS of Sleeve facing and with crochet hook, join yarn at underarm, ch 1, matching rows and working evenly sp down Sleeve edge [sl st in next st, ch 1] loosely down edge of Sleeve. Fasten off. Rep for 2nd Sleeve. Sew buttons opposite buttonhole­s. Make a 2-inch pompom and attach to top back point of hood or crochet a Chain Pompom as they do launder nicely and don’t fall apart after time.

CHAIN POMPOM First Half

Rnd 1: Leaving a 6-inch length at beg, ch 6, join in first ch to form a ring, ch 1, 15 sc in ring, join in beg sc. (15 sc) Rnd 2: Ch 1, working in front

lps (see Stitch Guide) only, (sl st, ch 5) twice in same st, sl st in same st, *(ch 5, sl st) 3 times in next st, rep from * around, ending with ch 5, sl st in same st as beg sl st.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, *(sc, ch 3) 3 times in same ch sp, sc in next ch-5 sp, rep from * around, join in first st, ch 5, sl st in rem back lp (see

Stitch Guide) of rnd 1.

2nd Half

Rnd 1: Working in rem back lp of rnd 1 of First Half, (ch 5, sl st) twice in same st, *(ch 5, sl st) 3 times in next st, rep from * around, ending with ch 5, sl st in same st as beg sl st.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, *(sc, ch 3) 3 times in same ch sp, sc in next ch-5 sp, rep from * around, join in first st, leaving a 6-inch length, fasten off. Pass the rem beg and ending lengths through point of Hood around 1 or 2 sts, knot ends tog and pass ends through pompom, trim any excess yarn. CW
