pale aqua 396 [396, 594] yds white • Size F/5/3.75mm crochet hook or

size needed to obtain gauge • 11 (1/2-inch) coordinati­ng buttons • Bear sew-on appliqué • Sewing needle and thread • Tapestry needle

GAUGE

In pattern: 9 sts = 2 inches; 9 rows = 2 inches

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Each pant leg is worked separately, then joined at the crotch with opening at the inseam. The back and fronts are worked separately across the top of the pant legs from side seam to side seam.

OVERALLS PANT LEGS Make 2. Ribbing

Row 1: With pale aqua yarn, ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, ch 1, turn. (6 sc) Rows 2–24 [26, 28]: Working in back lps (see Stitch Guide) only, sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. At the end of last ribbing row, ch 1, do not turn.

Leg

Row 1: Working across long edge of ribbing rows, sc in end of last ribbing row worked, [ch 1, sc in next ribbing row] rep across, changing color (see Stitch Guide) to white in last sc, ch 1, turn. (47 [51, 55] sts) Note: Starting with Row 2, alternate 2 rows white yarn, 2 rows pale aqua yarn unless otherwise indicated.

Row 2: Sc in first sc, [ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc] rep across, ch 1, turn. Rows 3–21 [27, 35]: Rep Row 2 for pattern. Row 22 [28, 36]: Work 2 sc in first sc, [ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc] rep across to within last sc, ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn. (49 [53, 57] sts)

Row 23 [29, 37]: Sc in first sc, ch 1, sc in next sc, work in pattern across to within last 2 sc, sc in next sc, ch 1, sc in next sc, ch 1, turn. (51 [55, 59] sts) Row 24 [30, 38]: Rep Row 2. Rows 25–27 [31–33, 39–41]: Rep Rows 22–24 [28–30, 36–38]. (55 [59, 63] sts) Draw up a slight lp on hook, remove hook, leaving a 3-inch length of yarn, cut yarn. After 2nd pant leg is worked, pick up dropped lp and sl st in last sc on last row of first pant leg, making sure same side of last rows are facing. Rep for other leg.

BACK

Row 1: With WS of last row facing and continuing in striped pattern, attach yarn to 29th [31st, 33rd] st on last row, ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, work in pattern across first pant leg, ending with sc in last sc, ch 1, sc in first sc on next pant leg and work in pattern across 26 [28, 30] more sts, ch 1, turn. (55 [59, 63] sts)

Rows 2–19 [22, 25]: Sc in first sc, [ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc] rep across, ch 1, turn.

Row 20 [23, 26]: Sc in first sc, do not ch 1, sc in next sc, work in pattern across until 3 sts rem

(sc, ch 1 and sc will rem), sc in next sc, do not ch 1, sc in last sc, ch 1, turn. (53 [57, 61] sts)

Row 21 [24, 27]: Sc dec (see

Stitch Guide) in first 2 sc, work in pattern across to within last 2 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc, ch 1, turn. (51 [55, 59] sts) Rows 22–41 [25–47, 28–55]: Work even in pattern, changing to white yarn after Row 34 [40, 48], fasten off pale aqua yarn and work last 7 rows with white yarn only. At the end of Row 41 [47, 55], turn, do not ch 1.

Underarm Shaping

Row 1: Sl st in first 3 sts, ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, work in pattern across to within last 5 sts, sc in next sc, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, leaving last 2 sts unworked, ch 1, turn. (45 [49, 53] sts)

Row 2: Sc dec in first 2 sc, work in pattern across to within last 2 sc, sc dec in last 2 sc, ch 1, turn. (43 [47, 51] sts)

Row 3: Sc in first sc, do not ch 1, sc in next sc, work in pattern across to within last 3 sts, sc in next sc, do not ch 1, sc in last sc, ch 1, turn. (41 [45, 49] sts)

Row 4: Rep Row 2. (39 [45, 49] sts)

Rows 5–16 [19, 22]: Work even in pattern across each row.

Neckline Shaping

Row 1: Work even in pattern across first 9 [11, 13] sts, do not ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, ch 1, turn. (10 [12, 14] sts) Row 2: Sc dec in next 2 sc, work in pattern across row, ch 1, turn. (9 [11, 13] sts)

Row 3: Work even in pattern across, fasten off. To work opposite edge of neckline shaping, with finished neckline shaping to the right, sk next 17 [19, 19] sts of Row 16 [19, 22] of underarm shaping, attach yarn in next sc.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, do not ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, [ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc] rep across, turn. (10 [12, 14] sts)

Row 2: Work even in pattern to within last 2 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc, ch 1, turn. (9 [11, 13] sts) Row 3: Work even in pattern across, fasten off.

FRONT

Rows 1–34 [40, 48]: Work the same as for back. At the end of last rep, fasten off pale aqua yarn, continue with white yarn only. (51 [55, 59] sts)

Row 35 [41, 49]: Work in pattern across first 23 [25, 27] sts, ch 1, turn. (23 [25, 27] sts) Rows 36–41 [42–47, 50–55]: Work even in pattern.

Underarm Shaping

Row 1: Sl st in next 3 sts, ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, sk next ch-1 sp, do not ch 1, sc in next sc, work in pattern across rem sts, ch 1, turn. (20 [22, 24] sts)

Row 2: [Sc in sc, ch 1, sk ch-1 sp] rep across to within last 2 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc, ch 1, turn. (19 [21, 23] sts)

Row 3: Sc in first sc, sk ch-1 sp, do not ch 1, sc in next sc, work in pattern across rem sts, ch 1, turn. (18 [20, 22] sts) Row 4: Rep Row 2. (17 [19, 21] sts) Rows 5–11 [13, 15]: Work even in pattern.

Neckline Shaping

Row 1: Leaving 4 sts at neckline edge unworked, work in pattern across, dec 1 st at neckline

edge (work dec the same as for underarm shaping). (12 [14, 16] sts) Rows 2–4: Working in pattern, dec 1 st at neckline edge. At the end of last rep, 9 [11, 13] sts rem. Rows 5–8 [9, 10]: Work even in pattern. At the end of last rep, fasten off. To work other front edge, with WS of Row 34 [40, 48] facing, sk next 5 sts, attach white yarn to next st and reversing shaping, work to correspond to first side.

SLEEVES Make 2. Ribbing

Row 1: With pale aqua yarn, ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, ch 1, turn. (5 sc) Rows 2–28 [30, 32]: Working in back lps only, sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. At the end of last rep, ch 1, do not turn.

Sleeve

Row 1: Working across long edge of ribbing rows, sc across

(do not work in pattern st), inc 11 [15, 19] sc evenly sp across, changing to white at end of row, ch 1, turn. (39 [45, 51] sc) Note: Starting with Row 2, work in pattern st and stripe pattern for rem of sleeve. Rows 2–6 [7, 8]: Work in pattern st.

Sleeve Cap

Rows 1 & 2: Work the same as Rows 1 and 2 of back underarm shaping. (31 [37, 43] sts) Rows 3–8 [10, 12]: Alternate Rows 3 and 2 of back underarm shaping (dec 1 st at beg and end of each row). (19 [21, 23] sts) At the end of last rep, fasten off.

ASSEMBLY

Sew front and back shoulder seams. Matching center of sleeve to shoulder seam, sew sleeves into armhole openings. Sew sleeve and side seams.

Front Opening Bands Button Band

Row 1 (RS): Working in ends of rows along left front opening edge, attach white yarn to end of first row at top edge, ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, sc in each row across, ch 1, turn. (18 [20, 22] sts) Rows 2–5: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn. At the end of Row 5, fasten off.

Buttonhole Band

Row 1 (RS): Attach yarn to end of row at bottom opening, ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, sc in each row across, ch 1, turn. (18 [20, 22] sts)

Row 2: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Sc in first 2 [4, 6] sc, [ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next 6 sc] twice, ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next sc, ch 1, turn. (3 buttonhole­s)

Row 4: Sc in each sc and each ch-1 sp across, ch 1, turn. (18 [20, 22] sts)

Row 5: Sc in each sc across, fasten off. Lap buttonhole band over button band and working through both thicknesse­s, sew bottom of bands together.

Leg Opening Bands Front Leg Opening Band

Row 1: Working across first and last rows of ribbing and ends of rows on front leg opening, with WS of garment facing, attach pale aqua yarn to first st on beg foundation ch, ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, sc in next 5 sts, sc in end of each row across, working in back lps only of ribbing, sc in next 6 sts only, ch 1, turn. (66 [78, 94] sts) Note: Work in ribbing st of back lps only across 6 sc on each ribbing.

Row 2: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Sc in first 2 sc, ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next 4 sc, [ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next 9 [8, 10] sc] 2 [3, 3] times, ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next 10 [8, 12] sc, [ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next 9 [8, 10] sc] 2 [3, 3] times, ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next 4 sc, ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next 2 sc, ch 1, turn. (8 [10, 10] buttonhole­s) Row 4: Sc in each sc and each ch across, fasten off.

Back Leg Opening Band

For back leg opening band, work the same as for front, omitting buttonhole­s and working in both lps of each sc throughout.

Neckline Edging

Row 1 (RS): Attach pale aqua yarn to end of Row 3 of front opening buttonhole band at neckline edge, ch 1, sc in end of next row and in each row and st around, ending with sc in end of Row 1 of left opening band, dec 1 sc over next 2 rows, ch 1, turn.

Rows 2 & 3: Sk first st, sc in next sc and in each rem sc around until last 2 sc rem, dec 1 sc over last 2 sc. At the end of Row 3, fasten off.

FINISHING

Sew buttons opposite buttonhole­s. Sew bear appliqué to right front bodice.
