FIRST LACE SIDE

Row 1: With RS of first Gumdrop facing, sc join (see

Special Stitches) white in any st, sc in next st, [ch 8, sc in any st of next Gumdrop, sc in each of next 2 sts] across until 1 Gumdrop rem, ch 8, sc in any st of last Gumdrop, sc in next st, turn. (16 [37] sc, 5 [12] ch-8 sps)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, [ch 5, 3 sc in next ch-8 sp, ch 5, sk next sc, sc in next sc] across, turn. (10 [24] ch-5 sps) Row 3: Ch 4 (see Pattern Notes), 5 dc in each ch-5 sp across, tr in last sc, turn. (2 tr, 10 [24] groups of 5 dc) Row 4: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), shell (see Special Stitches) in center dc of each 5-dc group across, dc in last tr, turn. (2 tr, 10 [24] shells) Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first st, (sc in first dc, hdc in next dc, ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next dc, sc in last dc) of each shell across, sc in last st. Fasten off.

Ruffle

With RS facing, join white around post of center dc of first 5-dc group of row 3, [{ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook} twice, sl st around post of center dc of next 5-dc group] across. Fasten off.

2ND LACE SIDE

Row 1: With RS of first Gumdrop facing, sk first 4 unworked sts, sc join white in next st, sc in next st, [ch 8, sk first 3 unworked sts of next Gumdrop, sc in each of next 3 sts] across to last Gumdrop, ch 8, sk first 3 unworked sts of last Gumdrop, sc in each of next 2 sts, turn. Rep rows 2–5 and Ruffle of First Lace Side.

FINISHING

Block Lace, pinning out points of row 5 to emphasize.

Napkin Ring: Sew short ends tog.

Place Mat: Fold 1/2- inch seam allowance on each long edge of fabric to WS and press. Fold

1/2 inch to WS again and press. By hand or machine, stitch

3/8 inch from outer edges. Rep on short ends of fabric. Topstitch close to pressed edge on all four sides of fabric. Press. Place Lace trim beside 1 short end of place mat and pin each point to fabric. With sewing thread, tack points of row 5 to edge of Place Mat. CW
