MATERIALS

• Red Heart Super Saver medium (worsted) weight acrylic/other fiber yarn (5 oz/260 yds/141g per skein):

1 skein #4313 Aran fleck

• Red Heart Super Saver medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (7 oz/364 yds/198g per skein): 1 skein each #0360 café latte, #0365 coffee, #0321 gold, #0319 cherry red and #0312 black

• Size H/8/5mm crochet hook • Tapestry needle

• Stitch marker

• Fiberfill

GAUGE

Gauge is not important for this project.

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Do not join rounds unless otherwise stated.

Place stitch marker at beginning of rounds and move marker up as each round is completed.

Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Invisible decrease (dec): Sc dec (see Stitch Guide) in front lp (see Stitch Guide) of indicated sts. Large shell (lg shell): 5 dc in indicated st.

Single crochet join (sc join):

Place slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw through st, yo, draw through both lps on hook.

Picot: (Sl st, ch 3, sl st) in indicated st. Small shell (sm shell): 3 tr in indicated st.

OWL

Rnd BODY 1: With Aran fleck, form a slip ring (see illustrati­on), ch 1,

6 sc in ring, do not join (see Pattern Notes), place st marker (see

Pattern Notes). (6 sc) Rnd 2: [2 sc in next st] around. (12 sc) Rnd 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around. (18 sc) Rnd 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts] around. (24 sc) Rnd 5: [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts] around. (30 sc)

This cute little fellow has a message to share! You’ll want to make several for Valentine’s Day gifts.

Rnd 6: Sc in each st around.

Rnds 7–17: [Rep rnd 6] 11 times. Rnd 18: [ Dec (see Special Stitches) in next 2 sts, sc in each of next 3 sts] around. (24 sts)

Rnd 19: [Dec in next 2 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts] around. (18 sts)

Rnd 20: [Dec in next 2 sts, sc in next st] around. (12 sts)

Stuff Body with fiberfill.

Rnd 21: [Dec in next 2 sts] around, join (see Pattern Notes) in beg st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (6 sc)

Sew opening at top of Body closed.

WINGS Make 2. Row 1 (RS): With café latte, ch 7, working in back bar of

ch (see illustrati­on), sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (6 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, [working in front lp only of each st across, sl st in next st, lg shell (see Special Stitches) in next st, sl st in next st] twice. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (4 sl sts, 2 lg shells)

Row 4: With coffee and WS facing, working in unused back lps (see Stitch Guide) of row 3, sc join (see Special Stitches) in first lp, sc in each lp across, turn. (6 sc)

Rows 5 & 6: [Rep row 2] twice. Row 7: Ch 1, [sl st in next st, lg shell in next st, sl st in next st] twice. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (4 sl sts, 2 lg shells)

TAIL

Row 1 (RS): With café latte, ch 10, working in back bar of ch, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (9 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, [working in front lp only of each st across, sl st in next st, lg shell in next st, sl st in next st] across. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (6 sl sts, 3 lg shells) Row 4: With coffee and WS facing, working in unused back lps of row 3, sc join in first lp, sc in each lp across, turn. (9 sc)

Rows 5 & 6: [Rep row 2] twice. Row 7: Ch 1, sc in first st, [sk next st, lg shell in next st, sk next st, sc in next st] twice. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (3 sc, 2 lg shells)

FEET Make 2.

Rnd 1: With gold, form a slip ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: Sl st in first st, [ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 2 chs, sl st in next st] 3 times, sc in each of last 2 sts, join in beg sl st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (4 sl sts, 11 sc)

EYES Make 2.

Rnd 1: With café latte, form a slip ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring, place st marker. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: [2 sc in next st] around. (12 sc) Rnd 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around. (18 sc) Rnd 4: Picot (see Special

Stitches) in each st around. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (18 picots)

BEAK

Rnd 1: With gold, ch 6, being careful not to twist ch, join in first ch to form ring, ch 1, sc in first ch and in each ch around. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: [Sc dec in next 2 sts, sc in next st] twice, join in beg st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (2 dec, 2 sc)

Sew opening at top of Beak closed leaving rem length for sewing Beak to Body.

HEART Row 1: With cherry red, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn. (1 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in st, turn. (2 sc) Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in last st, turn. (3 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, sc in last st, turn. (4 sc)

Edging Rnd: Sl st in first st (place marker in sl st just made),

sm shell (see Special Stitches) in next st, sl st in next st, (sm shell, sc) in last st, working down side of Heart, work 3 sc evenly sp across, sc in foundation ch, work 4 sc evenly sp across next side to marked st, join in marked beg sl st (remove marker). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (2 sl sts, 2 sm shells, 9 sc)

FINISHING

Refer to photo for placement.

1. Sew rnd 2 of Eyes to front of Body. With black, embroider French knot (see illustrati­on)

Pupil in middle of each Eye.

2. Lightly stuff Beak with fiberfill then sew Beak to Body in between Eyes.

3. Sew Wings on each side of Body being careful not to sew shells to Body.

4. Sew Feet to front portion of Body bottom.

5. Sew rows 1 and 2 of Tail to Owl’s lower middle back.

6. Cut strand of coffee 10 inches long, weave strand through st on bottom of Beak creating 2 5-inch strands then weave both ends

(from back to front) through middle sl st on Heart Edging Rnd. Pull ends tight to position Heart 1/2 inch below Beak, tie ends in bow.
